All of the cad stuff is done with inventor.....ive been using it for over ten years now its second nature to me. I get a place called spectrum to do my cutting.....they're relatively local, easy to deal with and produce a fine product.

Managed to find myself in the shed for one day this weekend and made a start on the temporary subframe.

I went and got some steel tube, some starter profiles cut and my subframe sandblasted;

Ran off some drawings to work to;

Grabbed my sledge hammer;

And got to work:

And here's the days result:

Hopefully more next weekend.

OK question time.

Why go to box section instead of the round tube you were using with the Suzuki frame?

Is the lower tie rod on the passenger side going to foul the sump? (If suspension points are positioned exactly the same as the original subframe?)

When can we place orders?

Going round tube at this stage is difficult and expensive. I'm just doing a bare-bones square frame to establish body and engine mounts, and necessary mounts for radiator, brake lines, etc.

When I get to a final frame I'll look into the option of tube, but RHS will probably win out due to it being cheaper, easier to work with, available in a bigger range of thicknesses, stuff like that.

I'm happy with how that Suzuki frame came up, but it was a lot of work and expense over what it needed to be. Still miles cheaper than buying a frame from someone else though.

The lower tie rod will foul the sump, but I should be able to get around that by altering the sump.
It won't need too much.

Sorry, not taking orders for this one - not yet anyway.

Gift vouchers, lay by, rain checks, rent to buy, post dated cheque...? :shock:

Thanks for the answers.

Update for the weekend, managed one day.

Cut the back out of the subframe and fitted the engine mounts:

Engine mounts are simple for now but they do the job:

Then I dropped the frontcut on. Fit first go.

I reckon the engine is in a spot that could work as is, but I'm just going to see if I can lift it a bit more, then it's onto radiator and inlet manifold.

That's it for now, check back next weekend for more progress.
:D

Its hard to resist the urge to over-engineer Harley, isnt it??!!

Over engineering not so much, but satisfying myself that every connection is as strong and well designed as it could be is important. You read enough threads and find enough photos of other peoples frames that have failed and you see a pattern of basic engineering principals that havent been followed.
