A question for all the Toyota Starlet guys on here, what's the reason you's stick with the 1.3L engine? why not go for the bigger 1.5L, 1.6L, 20valve engines :?:

Probably because of the smaller lighter package that will still allow for a thrbo and cooling system under the bonnet. I've seen bigger engines used but the cooling system was in the boot.

NCOP means a maximum of 1.5L turbocharged for a mini, so the 20V motors are out.

If I did it again Kenno I wouldnt do a Starlet.

They have a few benefits, mainly compactness and acceptable HP for their size, but if I did it again I would definitely go larger capacity N/A and enjoy the extra torque and smoother power delivery!

Plus, it would be easier and cheaper not having to run all that plumbing...!!!

I guess what I am trying to say is there are a lot better engines out there now, for less or equal money (and one of them got dropped off today in fact....!!)

Tricky

The reason I ask about the bigger engines is I came across a Toyota AE95 G, engine 4A-FE, 4WD. Looking at it I was disappointed the rear diff is a solid live axle (I was hoping for independent set up). But the main feature is the tranny for the rear drive line.
The gearbox also looks quite large, is it actually bigger than the Starlet box :?:
Are the different Toyota engines interchangeable on different gearboxs :?:

I remember looking at one of these ages ago with JC, I think it was out of a Tercel or something - we had aspirations of doing an AWD Mini. The solid rear axle, as you said, was a no-go, and yes, we were disappointed too with the old-style architecture, expecting it to be IRS.

The width of the 4A engine/gearbox was way to wide for the Mini, I think in the order of 980mm or something - way too wide anyway. And it was only like just over 100hp, less than the 4E-FTE (if that matters) - I even think it was SOHC so older technology.

4A and 4E totally different, they wont interchange - they will only interchange with gearboxes of their own family - A with A and E with E - like the 4E and 5E etc....

I would be grabbing a Honda VTEC or Nissan SR16 Neo if it was me. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tricky

I was keen on doing a 4age 20v transplant, I think the block was something line 60mm longer, and space is tight in the front of these things. That 60mm equated to it fitting, or not.

So starlet it is. 7 years on and now I probably would have down it differently too.
