Hi Phil,

Could you clarify a couple of things for me....'
1. How are you able to run a 2.0-litre turbo charged engine when the rules state that you are only allowed 2.5x the TARE for forced induction (VSB 14, Section LA, Clause 2.13)?? Just a query.

2. Also, are you running the steering column from the Subie?

ADR rules only clearly say that for engine replacements and conversions.
For ICVs, it's kind of a grey area: you can stick nearly any engine you want in as long as it gets though emissions.

Hi Tricky
Harley has hit the nail on the head.
MINIWRX is not an engine conversion. It is classed as an Independently Constructed Vehicle (ICV). As such you can build whatever you like as long as it complies with almost ALL of the Australian Design Rules.
The few that you do not have to comply with are Crumple Zones (beyond the ability of a home made car), Side Intrusion Bars (for the same reason above).
So I can have whatever engine I like.
I chose Subaru because the width inside a MY05 Impreza is only 100mm wider then the inside of a mini (door sill to door sill) is I worked out the with a Subaru floor pan I can fit the STI seats with only minor mods the the transmission tunnel.
Providing I fit the same brakes as those fitted to the donor engine car, then there are no issues there and the suspension is basically the same so very little verification is required unless you fit even bigger wheels then the Impreza comes with.
2.5 STI engine
STI suspension
STI brakes = all OK.
MY05 weighs 1485 Kg, MINIWRX calculated weight should be about 880 Kg.

I have used the entire Subaru floor, fire wall, Front and rear strut towers and sub frames (see the photo at the beginning) including the steering column (collapsible) and the existing mounting of the brake booster and all of the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals. Even the inner wheel arches are retained.

internet says 2.5l STI is 305bhp, the mini at 88kg makes it 346 bhp per tonne... same as a Lamborgini Murcielago 6.2l V12

I wonder what the traction will be like considering the lightweight body, should still sling shot you down the road.
Will you be needing softer springs at all :? :?: I'd assume the geometry will sit a bit higher and maybe the spring rate will be a bit too stiff....?

I think spring & damping rates will be the last thing on his mind, for a long while. :)
I'd assume he'd have some kind of adjustable ride height with the WRX gear.
I've got around 200Hp through the front, & the thought of a mini having 50% more power & 100% more grip is just mind-bogglingly awesome. I look forward to your build. :)

Grip should not be a problem with such light weight.
I have coil overs all round and have adjusted the ride height so that the MINWRX sits at the original height and without the drive shafts not having too much angle on them to get the strut towers to fit down below the mini body. With coil overs there are many spring rates available off the shelf so I can eventually get the right rate.

How grey?

Any further info regarding ICV's and power/weight?

For a naturally aspirated engine the maximum engine capacity is 3x mass of the Car.
A mini weighs approximately 600 Kg. 3 x 600 = 1800cc. So you can fit a Honda B18 in your mini !
But now it weighs more than 600 Kg and has a higher top speed. This is when the brake test is done to ensure that the deceleration rate (measured in G) is achieved without exceeding a specified pedal pressure. This is when you have to fit improved brakes beyond the original 7 1/2" discs.

How do I get on with a 2500cc turbo.
Simple. I'm using the Subaru floor, suspension, brakes, drive train that match the engine performance.
I should easily pass the brake test as the Suby weighs nearly 1500Kg and the MINIWRX is lighter at 880Kg so it will be easy to stop.

You can fit any engine to anything as long as the entire vehicle is tested to comply with the ADR's. Your engineer just has a lot of work to do to prove compliance.
This where mini is "simple" as the donor vehicle all of the matching requirements.

What is an issue is when you modify a "structural" member of the car. For example if you modify the beam on the front of the mini fire wall that joins the mountings of the front subframe together to fit your Weber of the inlet manifold of your B18. You have tampered with the structural integrity of the original body. This mod requires an engineers certificate by law.
