Yep, you are perfectly correct - I sought clarification from the Engineer this morning and he said Clause 2.13 doesnt apply with respect to ICV's - so I stand corrected as I was of the understanding (incorrectly so) that Clause 2.13 applies regardless (advise from a previous Engineer!!). Thanks for the pointer!!

Also, what does your Engineer say about the side-intrusion bars - I have been advised that I have to comply (50x25x3mm RHS from hinge to lock) - are you saying that you dont have to comply?

Cant wait to see this thing on the road, its gonna be a weapon at 880kg!! Doing great work!

Hi tricky
I had intended to fit bars as you describe. It's dead easy to do with sliding window doors but my engineer said I don't need to.
If that changes later it should not be an issue anyway as I had planned for it if needed.

What are the rules for door clear opening dimensions? Looking at the tube structure from the side it looks like it could be stiffened by a bar from the upper door hinge location down to low on the b pillar or the opposite. That obstructs the door opening though.

I had originally planned a bar as you described. My engineer agreed that it would provide improved stiffness but the RTA do not like "roll cages" even though mine is technically a "space frame". So it is not going in.
I have gone to some considerable effort to place all the bars of the Space Frame as close to the mini bodywork as possible so that all but the rear hoop and diagonal brace will be hidden by hood lining and "A" pillar trims. This should apparently appease the RTA.

& for anyone interested with the current Dept of Tpt rules,-->
if they are happy with me building a turbo charged alloy v8 powered mid-engined Manx buggy (true) that tells me they will let anything be built & registered :-)

This inconsistency is giving me the sh!ts!!

I have been told by my Engineer, that side instrusion bars MUST be installed, along with double acting rotary type, burst-proof locks - and no exceptions!! I dont mind doing the work, it is just more work that the client has to pay for so if they arent needed then this saves the cient some $$$...!!

Another grey area it seems - according to the info I have, any obstruction that hinders the ingress or egress of occupants is not allowed. This includes any structure that protrudes into the door opening, as defined by the clear space that the closed door occupies (if this makes sense)...??!!

I need to investigate this further!!

Yes, grey indeed. If you are modifying a car then bars can impede access but if you are building an ICV then the door apertures are what you make them. The outer skin can be larger than your aperture. So if you made a car to your own design styling then there is no obstruction. It only gets grey when using doors from an existing car on your ICV.

Miniwrx here may have been able to mask his tubing by covering it with sheet, making it a very high 'sill' and removing the 'roll cage' look.

Like any set of rules there are always multiple interpretations.

I think this build has negotiated the challenge of ADR compliance very well and informed the rest of us what is possible.

Tricky's carbon bodied space framed turbo monsters will be even better now.

Whoops, haven't kept people up to date, sorry.
Been working on my 850 with an 1100S engine.
Now that it's mostly sorted I need to get back to this.
The next step is stripping the existing Subaru harness of all the stuff I don't need connected, central door locking, speakers, air suspension etc.
