The cheapest and easiest conversion would be to an A+ engine out of the later model UK mini's. The best part is there are no mods to the subframe and body, they just bolt straight in.

Thought I'd mention this because people often don't realise the A+ engines are different to our old A seriers and they are much smoother, more powerful and more reliable.

Maybe the late multipoint injected ones are, but the early A+ are pretty much just a 1275 A series with a funny dizzy drive and ribs on the block.
Hardly any difference to an 1100S motor internally, except the conrods are a bit lighter.
I run one of each..... both are modified a bit.
They are both `reliable'...

Personally I think it would be over-kill but anything is possible with an angle grinder and a welder

Most Hybrid conversions are based around a 1300cc class motor and they are having trouble keeping traction under control so something bigger is going to have the "Wow" factor [or should that be "Ouch" in the wallet factor?] but is going to really struggle to perform any better.

Unless - you do a rear wheel drive conversion 8)

But....You did emphasise the "Cheapest" conversion in your original question - this is not it.

Your money - burn it any way you want

Correct me if I'm wrong but anything that needs a frame to be built from scratch is not going to be cheap by any means right? :?

No conversion is going to be particularly cheap, as you will need an engineers report,
but it's all relative :)
The Mazda 323 is a pretty heavy lump, and not that impressive in normally aspirated form.
If you could get a more modern alloy engine would be a better bet
- would depend on what you could get "cheap" & what size/hp you were shooting for...

Get the whole front cut, you may not get everything you need with just the engine, and that means $$...of course there will be bits left over..but you can sell them ;)

Honda Vtec NA or Turbod not many round these parts i think for what you have said you want you would either have to go
1, Toyota Starlet
2, Suzuki Swift
3, Honda Vtec

i know these have been done before BUT unless you have lots of money to spend go with a conversion that has been done proven and can be priced i think you could get away for any one of these conversions for between 5 and 8 grand depending on the amount of work you do

If you want something that hasn't been done before, is easy and cheap then leave the original mini engine in the front and bolt a thruster unit into the boot. It can be a turbine or even just a compressed air thruster. You can get a 100Hp jet engine with self start that will fit in the back of a go-cart so it will fit in the boot. Flick a switch and toast the guy in the car behind you at the lights

Really, all these Jap engined mini's have been done before. if you want something different then its time to think outside the square!

Wanting something that no-one has done before guarantees you will be a lot lighter in the pocket region :( .........

Any conversion if not doing the majority of work yourself will be expensive.
