Post subject:  Engineers reports re Brakes.

Hi all. Trying to find some information for a member of our club attempting to get a Mini engineered to put on the Classic scheme. He has most things in hand but needs a brake test/report for the KAD calipers and ventilated rotors on his car.
Has anyone done a similar brake conversion and had an engineers report done for this type of thing?
I am asking on behalf of the engineer as well. He can organise a brake test/report but evidently it is very expensive so hoping someone may have info to reduce the cost.
Thanks in anticipation.
Buggsy :)

I've not heard of any cases where engineering was required for bolt on calipers and discs - if they're from another car (eg civic or camira) then yes, but not the aftermarket mini stuff. If KAD can't provide it to you, finding someone elses could be tricky, and I don't think you can necessarily use those results on a different car can you?

Surely a rego inspection type brake test would do.
They measure deceleration rate against pedal pressure.
If it meets the criteria, then it passes.

sounds like there's more being engineered than just the brakes...

It's consistent (brake test & being expensive) with what my engineer said we'd have to do if I went for a non standard brake package such as twin pot calipers, hence I'm using cooper S brakes which I'm happy with so far.

sorry for getting off-topic, does the Micra have vented brakes standard?

I did this, the engineer after some searching found a mini variant that aligned with my Mini S that had the vented setup. The cert. was done back in 2015. Details as follows if your eng. wants to talk to him. He was doing some engineering for my brothers truck. I believe that there is an option for approval if a similar car is already approved, you just have to do a normal brake test.

No, abs on the super S, the micra guys upgrade with n14 pulsar or GTIR brakes I think.
The mini is still the same weight so standard cooper s brakes are powerful enough and no fade so far. Calver reckons mini brakes hardly ever get hot enough to work at thier optimum so vented would seem unnecessary at this stage, 4 pots would be nice but if it means lots of extra expense then there's probably better things to spend money on like cams or a LSD.

Liability is something users worry about after it happens and engineers worry about before it happens, that's why cars crash less. Bigger brakes place bigger loads on everything, it's not the stopping force that an engineer has a liability for, it's the fatigue life of everything effected. Cars today arn't designed to avoid breaking, they are designed to break later (that's why we test in cycles not ultimate strength).

Anyone know what part of the world McBuggsy lives in?

If you go to any user's post and click on the Profile button you will be taken to a page that has a few basic details about them. Click on Search Users Posts and you may find some clues in the text of one or more of their posts.

There was an awful lot of work done 3-4 years ago to reduce the costs of brake testing, and the majority of brake tests can now be completed on plate-type brake testers without requiring lots of high speed stops and closed road surfaces.

Since I stumbled upon this thread, I'll add that when I had the supercharged Mini engineered I needed to add dual circuit disc brakes for him to pass it; and as it happened they were KAD 7.9", like the OP.

Engineer needed to see a proper brakes test (not just like a pink slip strap-into-the-front seat one) and so I had this done on a shop's plate brakes tests.

And the engineer said this is basically 100% full marks for brake pedal, deceleration peak and front/rear balance. He was quite impressed at the pedal pressure (I don't run a booster).

It was pretty cheap I remember thinking. Like under $100 and took maybe 15 mins.

Took us 9 months of negotiation to get them to accept the results from those plate based testers! The RMS wanted everyone to rent an airport runway and do a sequence of nearly 100 stops!
