Daihatsu Sirion GTVi is my vote. No one has done it yet so be different.
After a quick look I found these figures for the following engines;
-Daihatsu Sirion GTVi:
N/A 1.3L Twin cam, 98hp, 120Nm.
It is a more modern engine and they can be cheaper than the following two, I hav'nt found much info on forced induction but I'm sure it's do-able.
-Suzuki Swift GTI:
N/A, twin cam 1.3L, 98hp, 113Nm.
These are an old engine now and are starting to get hard to find but they do have big tuning potential (turbo, over bore/block swap, some guys with GTI's are pushing 250hp+).
-Toyota starlet GT:
Turbo, twin cam 1.3L, 135hp, 157Nm.
A common conversion in Australia but these too are a bit thin on the ground and AFAIK were not factory released here so if you want one you may need to import a half cut. Most guys on here are getting between 130 up to 200hp.
-Vtec yo, B16:
N/A 1.6L twin cam with Vtec, 160hp, 148Nm.
Yes these have to most power, common = cheap and have a big tuning market BUT they are the heaviest and largest engine in this list. Also they can't be turboed in a mini as the cc is too big.

Then if max hp isn't your thing you can go for a 50hp 3cyl charade/Sirion engine. Only real benfit is great L/100km figures and a 5th gear (over the stock mini) plus you could squish in some air con as it's a small engine.

Nissan CG13DE, 16 valve 5 speed 1275, unimpressive standard figures but a better exhaust and inlet and tune which are required for the conversion will get you to around the 90 to 100hp. The only 4 cylinder car engine I know of that will fit without cutting the inner wings or modifying the body, obviously the subframe needs mods. Also a lighter engine than most with alloy block and head, online weights say down to 80kg for engine and box but when I weighted mine it was about 110kg. Can get them cheap as they were sold in Australia some limited aftermarket support as there was a micra rally series in the UK and parts about in Japan.

^^^^
Yeah I forgot about the Nissan Micra, 74hp and 103Nm can be a good option.
But I did look up a Clubman GT 1275 and they are ment to have 77hp and 108Nm. A 1098 has 45ph and 76Nm and finally a 998 has 33hp and 712Nm.
So you need to ask yourself if you put the 10+ grand into a mini's engine how good can you get it going???
