Ok, thanks very much. So I have a Mk 1 gearbox at least. Thats good.

On the bad note, took the subframe to the engineer today, and he wasn't happy with it at all. turns out there are clearance issues in a few places, and he wants basically all of the welding "fixed". So I think I will be doing what most if not all have done, build a jig and cut the whole front off the bastard. I have looked a lots of builds now, and I think the square RHS frame is the way to go.

Watch this space and please point out any areas of concern as I go.

That feedback about the subframe is dissappointing, but doesnt come as a surprise to be honest.
The fabrication and welding on it is pretty rough, and engineers tend to get extra picky when you present something that somebody else built without their design input.

Fortunately for you, gti frames are easy to build and you can now consider putting better engine mounts in and perhaps even change the gearbox to a later type with a lower diff ratio.

Yeah, he was positive about it though. Just didn’t like the combination of bird crap welds with angle ground welds.
So I had heard that the mk1 gearbox is somehow stronger than later ones? Is this true or just crap? Would I t would be possible to replace just the diff to reduce the ratio?

It may be possible to just replace the diff but it might have to be an aftermarket unit.

I put a 1.3 swift cino box in mine - lower drive in that much better for road use. Yes the GTI ones are stronger but I think you'd have to thrash it really hard in a mini with its little wheels and low weight to break a low kms cino box. I got the whole box for $150 or there abouts.

Plenty of people stick with the stock gti box - it just depends if you're building a screamer or a cruiser.

Awesome. I will look into it. I’m no boy racer... lol

Have you got any pics of your subframe? I have looked at lots of builds, but the more the merrier I say. Every one of them has been just a little different.

BTW is there a way to identify what a gearbox came out of? I have a spare, but no idea what model it is out of.

I have a Mk1 GTI box in my Sports sedan mini.
The only part that is stronger than the later ones is the diff, having 4 spider gears.
Running 13" slicks, I wish I had a shorter ratio than 4.1

Aren’t you able to replace the crown and pinion? I guess I might open it up and see what’s inside. I have a fair bit of time ahead of me now that I have to re-do the subframe as well as the bodywork on the car.

I’ve been mad busy lately, so only just got a day to work on the subframe today. First with a jig to keep all of the holes where they are supposed to be, and as I moved on, things were just not looking good at all. Once the front was secured, straight and square, the passengers side tower was leaning back by about 35mm. (See photo)

Anyway, all straightened up now, front half cut off and tie rod brackets liberated ready to join up with the RHS. Slowly slowly, we are on the way.

Guys, can anyone help me with a part number for the engine mount for under a mk1 GTi gearbox? There seem to be ample for the back drivers side and front drivers side, even the front gearbox steady, but I can’t find the bottom one.

Cheers in advance.
