Looking at knocking together a simple rotisserie to suit my mini. I've see pics of rotisseries for mini's that just have a pole poking through the hole in the firewall, straight through to the hole in the rear seat, and was wonderin if anyone has had experience with this setup?
How well balanced is it?
Easy to rotate?
does it hold when rotating?
how to brace the body to the pole?
any other info or idead would be nice

Have been looking at plans for fully customisable length and width rotisseries all morning but like the basic idea better.

Thanks, Matt.

Simple?

2 x Supercrap engine stands with a pole through them.

I've looked at that - aren't the round bits on the stands angle up a bit so you wouldn't get a straight though link between the two?

I've bult a rather crude one out of various RHS and tube offcuts I got for $0 from my local scrap metal yard.

The shell has a pole going through the speedo and rear seat holes, and I've bolted this to the rear shock absorber mounts and the front is bolted to the holes for the front subframe (the ones near the firewall, where the studs on top of the frame come through)

Seems quite sturdy, easy to rotate, makes life stripping the underside of the car much easier.

I'll post up some photos later today

Andrew

I did exactly this method, it worked very well, there's no up angle on the pipes either.

The only problem is that the height of the engine stands is only sufficient to roll the car to about 45 degrees before the sill touches the ground. Easy fixed if you cut and weld a piece in, or stand the whole lot up on timber blocks.

Roughly what do supercheap charge for the engine stands? How sturdy a pole do you need to skewer the car? How much longer than the car do you reckon the pole needs to be?

Don't see why it wouldnt work. Even supercrap engine sands are rated at 850kg, probably more. a bare mini shell weighs maybe 300kg. I was thinknig of the engine stand idea after it was mentioned here (been thinkin bout it all day) and was considering putting a U shape framework off the engine mount plate and bolt it onto where the subframes sit, that way the centre of gravity of the car can be made to be inline with pivot point of the stand. Only thing is, as mentioned earlier, it won't go past 45, if that, without whacking an extra length in the middle. If i did that I'd probable put a lenght in the middle with a slightly oversived sleeve that covers both joins in the extension just for added strength. Might have a look at supercheap engine stands this weekend, then contemplate it... I'll post pics if it work out well

Mine is in here somwhere http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... cs+rebuild it could be 100mm higher and maybe half a meter longer but it still works well the way it is.

This is Mick's Supercrap rotisserie (which now lives in my garage, thanks Mick 8) )

Notice here that the stands are sitting up on wheel rims to get a little extra ground clearance.

Worked a treat, I would however have welded in an extension to jack them up a little, but I did not want to alter the SWL rating and safety of the stands, particularly as they were going to move on after I was done with them.

You could always get a 2nd hand queen size mattress and tip it on its side onto the mattress. Working on one side at a time it works okay... As long as you're not welding ;-)

This one's mine, sorry, not the best photo, but the only one I could find

The shell can be rotated through 360 degrees without hitting, I've since added some wheels to it to make in portable.

Ths could be a winner - my painter needs a rotisserie for working on my car. How did you connect the 'pole' to the car?
