What did you use to cool it, and where did you get it?

While you're waiting for MiniKit to come back, I can tell you how I've done it?

You get a heat gun (like a blow drier,,, an EXTREME BLOW DRIER!!!!) and a hammer. You push firmly under the dent in the middle usually (but don't put your weight into it, just firm is all it needs,,, about enough that the panel is juuuuust about to flex) using the butt of the hammer handle and heat the whole dent.

Eventually it "pops" back to shape

It works well on plastic bumpers as well.

If you are doing a dent bigger than the your hand print I would suggest using a block of 4X2 instead so that you don't stretch the panel.
.
.
.
I should point out again that this does not work on all types of dents
.
.
.
I'm interested to hear about Minikit's method too, it sounds like the "Paintless dent removal" that you hear about with the smash repair guys talk about.

wasn't too hard. I've done it twice now once on the driver's side front quarter but the first time was on the roof.

When I first got my mini there were a few spots of bog with cracks in it. After removing all the paint from the roof there was a massive dent right in the middle. I wouldn't say somebody had sat on it but it was pretty damn close. Whoever did the first repair pushed it out as best they could and I tried also. I'd push it up and it would stay there for about 5 deconds before becoming concave again.

I had a chest freezer at the time. I filled a bucket of water up and left in there until it was icy cold. I heated up the dent for what seemed like ages, but in reality it was only about 8 minutes, moving the heat gun over the area.

I had a helper and while I was doing the heat gun thing I asked them to get the bucket of water, they came back and I handed him the heat gun as he passed me the bucket of water and I threw it over the roof. It made a "PONG" kind of noise and popped out..

But I've also heard of wet towels working, anything really, but whatever it is has to get the heat out of the panel damn quick..

Also if you want to see other people doing it go to you tube and search for paintless dent removal.

Awesome MiniKit :)

I found this this morning on Youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0UAUBE-Hmg

Very similar to what your talking about expcet they use Co2 instead of ice.

I'm really suprised to hear it worked on a mini, you see it done on new cars all the time because they are made out of a flimsy guage of steel.

I'll give it a wirl on a donar and come back with pic's.

Cheers :)

I heard that some new cars are using high tensile steel in some panels, I am guessing they would retain there memory better than mild steel and pop back easier using these PDR and heat cold methods

I just gave it a wirl on a mini,, what I found was....

It works on flat panels where there is little stretching.

It does not work on panel shapes with tight curves

It does not work on panels already covered in bog

It does not work on rusted panels
.
.
.
MiniKit, I couldn't get the panel hot enough with out burning the paint... you said

Did you end up burning the paint?
.
.
.
On newwer cars, with thinner panels you don't need to get them as hot (hence why you can use a blow drier)

Oh yeah toasted it good and proper.

I had removed all the bog first on the roof....

I'm currently working on a dent puller made out of an old suspension shocky out of a washing machine too. Cheap and disposeable.. I'll post up some pics if it works, and, if anyone is interested of course..

Removes the dent and washes the car at the same time - what a great idea!! :D

This is one of the best threads I have read! Great advice, any chance of some spraying instructions for two pack?

Thanks owen1975richard, glad you like it.

2k is great, in that it lasts longer than acrylic, it's harder to chip, harder to scatch, it doesn't fade as quickly, its a little less labourious to apply (doesn't require compounding.. but it can be), it tolerates UV light better... there are a lot of advantages.

BUT

I'm sorry mate, I won't teach people to use it. You need to use it in a spray booth and you need to use an Air Fed face sheld, and a sealed suit.

It is Leathal stuff.

It is illegal to use it at home. As it, Acrylic is only barely legal to use at home.

Sorry mate. Happy to tell you anything you want to know about Acrylic, but no 2k.

This is a thread I previously put up, teaching acrylic if your interested http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... 0&start=75

EDIT: If you need to know about the effects of using it without proper safety gear, just ask micowen. He'll tell you allllllll about it.

I agree, I don't see what body repairs has to do with engine mods :?
Perhaps it needs to be moved to the "how to" section so it doesn't get lost 500 pages deep in mini chat section, that's the only reason I can see why it was moved here.
