My horn surround was no good and Morris horn button is so so. I have seen a few go on ebay but I thought condition was hard to gauge and wasn't sure about bidding on?

I decided to try something different and by the new reproduction horn surround from UK mini specialist.

the condition of my horn button

Horn dressing/retainer had to be polished as you cannot use the one that comes with new horn button surround because its inside diameter is too large for original Morris button.

These are the parts in comparison

You can see the old button has two tab slots where the new one doesn't as plastic button retainer is designed to clip in.

You will then need to measure and create two tab slots. I used a small drill then filed holes into slot using a needle file.

Place horn components in and twist tabs on back with pliers.

Finished! Looks pretty good with a polish and should be pretty strong as being new.

In summary
I would give the actual quality of the horn an 8 out of 10, as in particular it was 0.45mm over size on the diameter fitting into the steering wheel. Still does fit and could be reduced down easy enough though with a bit of emery clothe, etc.

Overall not a bad solution if you cannot find a suitable replacement but sourcing a better original may still be your preference to start with.

Hope this helps if you are wondering about this option :D

Sweet,

Now I know how it pulls apart I can have a crack at reconditioning my horn button.

If not I know how to use one of the new ones.
