What is peoples opinion of painting a mini model to get a smooth shiny finish??

I was thinking about buying a model airbrush kit thing - there pretty cheap from ebay like $30 - $40.

I have a model im goin to make look like mine

You can do the air brush thing or you can buy a little aerosol cannister from your local automotive paint supplier followed by a clear coat if you're using a metallic. That's what I did.

I'd bought a cast alloy model, dismantled it. Paint stripped the body and resprayed it with the same colour as my car. The paint guys actually mixed the paint up for me from the colour code I gave them. It was probably the smallest sale they ever made. LOL

one thing you have to be careful of with some automotive paints used on models is that they are made differently to model paints, and in some cases can 'eat' the model

What is the model , I'm guessing ou've got a corgi clubman you are going to paint up the same as your GT will be ? If it's a die cast metal model then automotive paint will be fine , use an aerosol can of primer , rub it back with very fine wet and dry paper then paint with an aerosol can , an air brush or even a normal automotive spraygun (on a fine mist , don't spray it as heavy as you would a car) . I used automotive touch up paint aerosols on the two monet carlo mini's I did a while ago in here somewhere .

If it's a plastic kit however automotive paints and the thinners used in them will most likely dissolve the plastic and you'll be left with a bubbly abstract impession of a mini sculpture . Model paints from any hobby store are best for plastic , they can be thinned following the manufacturers instructios and sprayed with a cheap air brush or similar (normally there isn't enough in a tin/jar to put through a normal spray gun) .

Just remember though that what I did there won't work with plastic models as the auto thinners eats them .

There is also this thread of Miguels on the IMMCC which show's a modified 1275 GT , you could do similar to yours and add external door hinges and use a texta to put 1/4 vents in the windows ...

How would it be possible to ad external door hinges??

You'd have to glue the doors shut like Miguel has in that link , then cut some tiny slivers of plastic (or even coke can) and glue them on . WIll be fiddly but will really make the difference . They will only have to be tiny too .

I resprayed a modle porsche 911 for a freind of mine...it was white but his real one was yellow...i pulled it all apart....took lots of photos of it and resprayed it but baked it in our oven and i got a great finish...nice and smoth...as i heated the car inbetween coats...so paint went on with no runs..
i did my metro brake calipers the same way too...stunk the house ...so wife wasent very happy
