whos got any information about the new powerplant of the new new MINI,
i know its 1.6 and turbo and not made in khazakstan like the previous engine..

but crucially, does it have twin cams and is it all alloy?

Its a PSA engine shared with the Pug 207GT and Citroen X3/X4.

Its the 1.6 L engine, twin cam, all alloy, Good engine. The Cooper S had the turbo of the same engine.

However, the biggest change is the engine. Gone is the outdated Chrysler-sourced, Brazilian-built Tritec 1.6 engine. Its position is substituted by BMW's own 1.6-liter engine built in its Hams Hall engine plant in England. On the one hand this raises the Mini's British content to 60 percent, on the other hand it improves refinement and efficiency significantly. The BMW engine has aluminum head and block, so it is lighter than the iron-block Tritec by 10-15 kilograms and should offset the longer front overhang. The Tritec did not have any kinds of variable valve timing, but the BMW engine has dual-VVT, or in BMW's language, Bi-Vanos. To improve fuel efficiency, it employs Valvetronic variable valve lift in place of conventional throttle butterflies to reduce pumping loss. Besides, it uses a water pump and oil pump driven by electric motors. They work according to cooling / lubrication demand, unlike conventional mechanically driven systems which work continuously at any time. The result is less energy wasted and higher fuel efficiency.

I'd happy own that Mini with a engine like that. Of coursae if you're going to spend the oney why not get the JCW tuning kit attached as well.

right now i have 3 of them downstairs at my work being wrapped for fashion week, One of them being a yellow S, As it was being backed of the tow truck i have to say i was a little dissapointed with the engine note, maybe it was cold or something but it sounded similar to the putting noise i associate with old vw's hahahha. i nominated myself as the driver to drive it into our factory and what a shame that i have to take it around the block to get to our driveway. I stuck the weird round key into its slot and pressed the cool red glowing engine start button & took off up the road, once out of the view of my boss, i gave it a bit of stick and as it hit boost a big smile came across my face, sadly my block isnt huge and before i knew it i was back at my works entrance and gliding the car inside. Once inside we pooped the bonnet to have a look, first thing we noticed, the lights actually stay where they are and the bonnet opens around them. Then we notice the turbo, its right there at the very front and up high in the engine bay, odd place but makes for easy locating. Overall i dont mind the car, it sits a little to high if you ask me, and the wierd carpet stuff in the wheel wells doesnt seem like a good idea to me, and the bonnet seems a little to "flat" but the performance more than makes up for these isssues, and plus it has a push button start, how rad!!

I drove a new Cooper S (turbo) on monday. What a blast. It goes like a rocket and has great handling too. Obviously its not the quickest thing on the road but considering fuel economy I think it probably is.

I am considering buying one as my daily to replace my tired RX7 and avoid getting another dunnydore (hohum boring).

What did i like? -

I like the look of the new Bini, it's only suttle differences like a Mk1/Mk11 comparo so it hasn't lost anything over the previous one.
I like the new engine, it has the throttle response of a weber equipped Mini and this makes a big difference to the fun factor.
I like the new seats. The old seat styling really let the car down.
Fuel consumption - it uses F-all fuel for the performance.
Features - Things like cruise control, climate control etc make the car easier to use as a daily and weekend trips too.

What I don't like -

Price - It seems way too expensive compared to other cars, BUT it holds its price in the second hand market meaning buying one as a company style lease is a good option. From this point of view I think it's reasonable value considering the depreciation a similar priced dunnydore would cop over say 3 years.

Just heard off the grape vine that a year or two on, after Mercedes had joined with Chrysler
(Hence the reason for the Pug engine in the BMW now)

That Mercedes has now had a record loss and is dumping Chrysler completly.
