That is a great effort, however, I seem to recall that they tried last year and the car was burnt to the ground during the event.

In one of the TV segments it was cpmpared to a regular Countryman. Only thing the same was front headlights, windscreen and rear tail lights.

Reporter commented why it has a 3000cc litre twin turbo diesel engine compared to a 1600 cc four.

Yep, so it's got about the same road car content as any other supposedly "production-based" race car.

It is about as close to a road-going MINI Countryman as a V8 Supercar is to a Falcondore - actually, maybe less because of the engine difference.

So, you could say that a vehicle that vaguely looks a bit like a vehicle that vaguely looks a bit like a car that looks like a modern interpretation of a Mini, won an event that vaguely resembles the original Paris-Dakar rallies.

Sure, it was a great effort, and it is still one of the toughest, if not the toughest, rallies in the world, but it aint no MINI.

BTW - I'm not a MINI hater, but I do greatly dislike the Countryman.

Im not overly fond of them myself but it has a MINI badge on the front thats all that matter to me. Dont care how close it is to a road legal car, its good for the marque as a whole.

Even then I don't think the V8 Supercars' engines are particularly closely related to the road ones - about the only thing in common is the cylinder configuration.

And I wonder how they can still call it the Dakar when it's not even on the same continent any more. :?
