My 02 cooper has had a couple of eletirc problems in the past but nothing major in the past, But the other morning I went to drive to work and I had,

no indicators or head lights
no warning lights on the speedo apart from the handbrake light
no dash illuimanation at all
no air con
drivers window wouldn't auto windup

scaned the ecu at work found code for no can/bus communication with instrument ecu and check the fuses (which are all ok) erased the fault code got exterior lights working again but still got no interior warning lights on the speedo and none of the warning chimes work

anyone else had a problem like this?

Well there was a problem with the 02 and early 03 cars where if the sunroof gutter drains blocked, or if the car was parked facing downhill in very wet conditions, water would get out of the gutter and run down the inside of the A pillar and go right into the body control unit (thing that controls everything). In some cases the unit even unlocked the car or opened the sunroof and the car would get even more wet inside!
The factory did a band aid fix after that: they put a rubber boot on the computer. Water still gets in, but no electricals go nuts.

I'd check out the forum MINI2 or North American Motoring, plenty more people over that way may be able to help you more than some here.

Yeah I have seen this. I work for geelong BMW/mini and I have seen the "kombi" which is the instrument cluster in the centre go and it brings the hole car down as its the gateway to all the other control units in the car

got into the car at lunch and everything is working again :D I had to park it in the rain facing slightly down hill.

so I think I am going to have to check ont the water drain points on the sunroof to make sure they aren't blocked

thank you for the heads up

Didn't know that the Binis don't like water also are we sure that they arn't powered by lucas
