Post subject:  02 Cooper with more problems. Help please

Hi, the sister in law owns a 02 Cooper with CVT Auto. Has developed a large problem and thought maybe someone on here could maybe help us out.

Symptoms -
When slowing down from about 20kph and less it shudders real bad.
To a point where when you stop, the idle doesn't recover and it stalls.
Problem has been getting worse over the past couple weeks.
Happens more when the motor is cold and less when the motor is warm.
Not sure if its the brakes or the CVT or the ECU or engine or whatever

If you need any more info let me know.

The auto gearboxes (and 5 speed manuals) on the early cars were riddled with problems, most of which some believe are due to BMW claiming they're 'sealed for life' and never need the fluid changed.
Following that logic, in an 11 year old car the transmission fluid could be worn out or low on the level which explains the difference in hot / cold running.

Hopefully its just that and the car hasn't been driven enough to do further damage.

The fluid in the cvt are supposed to be changed at every inspection 2 service.

You need a special hose connection to screw into the sump as the filler plug is lower than it should be. Also if u change it we use to catch and measure how much came out then put the same amount back in as they always caused problems if they where to less or to much
