My daughters 04 Cooper S has the ABS light on all the time , any ideas as to where to start looking for the problem , or is it a computer hook up to find the fault ?

Check that none of the wheel speed sensors are damaged. Should be a sensor on each hub and just check the wiring from the wheel to the inner guard. If they are all plugged in and don't look damage then you will probably need to get it scanned.

Alternatively, go down the road and stand on the brakes. If there is a problem with one of the wheel sensors that wheel should lock up.

If you try this method all the brakes will lock up
If the ABS light is on the system is disabled the brake system go's back to a normal non ABS system

You will need to scan the ECU with a scan tool

Ok so i haven't played with MINI abs but i have played with the new suzuki swifts. I do quite a lot of work on the race cars in the australian swift series and as they are constantly crashing etc so they often damage the sensors. We often test the cars out and even though the abs light is on, it is only ever the faulty wheel that locks up, all the rest work as per normal.

Brake pads sensor. check that your front brake pads are nor worn out.. IF they are, you have to replace the pad sensor

Doesn't that turn on the brake warning light (handbrake, low fluid etc) not the ABS light?
