With respect to all Bini owners. I'm looking at turning to the dark side and buying a Bini!

JCW are hard to find and sell quickly so I've turned my attention to a late 2003 or 2004 Supercharged Cooper S which are reasonably cheap right now and I've been told will be highly collectable in the future.

My question; is it possible the Bini will ever reach the iconic status of the classic Mini?

The classic Mini is easy to work on even for a novice like myself. It's simple, if it won't start it's most likely electrical, if it stops while running it's most likely fuel. The nearest thing the classic Mini has to a computer is a 20 amp fuse!

In 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years times how easy it be to get parts for a Bini and actually be able to replace them yourself in the home garage?

Im sure if you posted the same question on mini2 you will get a completely different answer. Still plenty of haters here so doubt you will get much positive comments.

My opinion is yes they will be, eventually. Not as collectable as the classic because not as many people have owned them or grown up with them or learnt to drive in one etc.

Things like the dakar are good (yes yes we are all aware they bare little resemblance to a road MINI) for the marque and the mini challenge was good to show how fast they can be (faster than any of the v8 utes around the track). It seems motorsport pedigree goes a long way to making a car collectable.

They will always be collectable to someone and my guess is it will be the early r53 jcw's prior to the 04 facelift due to the fact there will not be that many around.

Based on classics in general, I would look for the earliest S I could find and definitely within the first year that they were sold locally. I think the clubman might end up being collectible due to poor sales, but it might be that sort of collectible that doesn't translate into large dollars (e.g. P76s are rare and collectible but don't get falcon coupe money).

BMW still make parts for their more popular models from years gone by like the 2002, so with the number of MINIs sold there will no doubt be some market in the future.
It's just a matter of cost: an airbag for example has a 15 year working life - if you have a modern car and want to rebuild it and need to legally replace all the airbags then you could be up for $30k.
Engine computers, sensors, complex wiring systems dont make it easy for the average Joe to rebuild their own cars. Bodywise - you can't just cut rust / damaged bits out and replace like with cars from the 60s. Modern cars run high strength steels so whole sections need to be replaced.

In the future, millionaires will be able to have their restored cars from the early 2000s, but for others its hard to say.

I can see cars built up to about the 80s/ 90s going up in value because of their relatively simple mechanics and electrics making them easier to rebuild / restore / modify - compared to newer counterparts.

I agree, I think most of it is due to legislation and car safety but I also believe car manufacturers don't want people keeping cars on the road too long!

As for costing $30k for a full resto a classic Mini can cost just as much!
