On the Tyre placard on my daughters 04 Cooper S it says recommended tyre size & rim ,
195/55 R 16 87 V --- 205/45 17 84 V .

Does this mean that i can only run " runflat tyres " on this car , because of the "R" , or is it legal to run normal
tyres ?
Has anybody had any experience with this issue ?

No law states they have to be run flat, just the load and speed rating have to be equivalent or higher.
Just have some finileak or similar.

205/45-17 is a fairly common size, should have quite a selection.

I spoke to a guy at Bob Jane today and he has put plenty of normal style tyres on MINI'S .

With the Yokohama deal on at the moment , ( buy 3 , get 1 free ) i'm looking at my daughter saving some dollars
so that she can re-shoe her car , with decent tyres , at a reasonable cost , so he quoted me a price for Runflats as well as normal style tyres , which works out very good with their current deal .

Got rid of my run flats in 2005. Had 3 lots of 'high performance' tyres since then, mainly Dunlops. 195/55 will be more comfortable than 205/45. I compromise with 205/50's which are good for regular driving as well as track days. Speed rating and maximum weight loading are important. Your tyre supplier will confirm that for you.

Thanks for the replies people , my daughter is getting a new set of shoes for it tomorrow ,
Yokohama C Drives 195/55-16 . We opted for the normal type tyre , so we will see how they go ,
best start hunting around for a spare to suit , any ideas ?

Little compressor and can of tyre goo, I have a pack that fits into the little cubby hole in the boot.

What i had with my 'S' was the compressor / goo pack and a spare 17" wheel at home and an old tyre.
You could get both for under $50 if you're lucky.

Got a call from old mate at Bob Janes Newcastle this arvo whilst at work , he tells me that they don't have , and can't get any Yokohama tyres to fit her car :x , because the special Yoki deal that they have had running for a month has cleaned out that particular tyre stock.

He is going to look into what else they might be able to supply for the same money , but i did tell him i didn't want any recycled " Taiwanese Thongs " .

Might have to check out our local tyre mobs to see what they have in stock .

Harley & babes , when you say goo packs , what are they exactly , are they a MINI product , or something
that you have bought aftermarket , like Fineleak?

Buy it from any auto shop, its a goo you can squirt into the tyre which seals a leak until you get to a tyre shop. Tyre shops hate them as when they take the tyre off they get shite all over their tyre machine.

Just for insurance, I would check her insurance policy fine print on tyre changes or changes from the original build spec...ya never know!

[no comments about how fitting different brand tyres is common plse...eg "I fitted Michelin XAS to my Datto 1600"...this is about runflats]

We appear to be having trouble getting 195/55 -16 style tyres , not a common size apparently , I've been ringing around a couple of places to see if anyone has any in stock , no luck .

I've just had a Tyre Dealer mention the Insurance issue again ,basically saying that if the car come with Runflats , that's what we had to put back on it , bearing in mind i'm not changing the tyre size , load or speed rating ,( according to the tyre placard on the car ) , just the tyre design.

I then rang Bob Janes again and was told the same as last time , that you can put normal type tyres on the MINI / Runflat rim , but you can't put Runflat Tyres on standard type rims , apparently the lip inside the R/F rim is a bit taller , this is becoming a PIA !

Good point Mick ,I'm going to check with her insurance to clarify what's real & what's not .
