I've not delved into the MINI gearboxes before, but a colleague has asked if I may be able to find out more about a problem affecting her car.

The driveshafts are apparently popping out (??) on her car requiring a gearbox rebuild to replace worn splines (??), for this she has been quoted about 6000 dollars (!!) via BMW.

In any case, can anyone extrapolate what the problem is she is talking about, and is it possible to direct her to a more reasonable real world gearbox rebuilder in the NSW/VIC area?

Cheers

Mick

Hi Mick,
We rebuild many Midlands & Getrag 5 speeds. Also done a few Getrag 6 speeds. Have not come across this one before, have the driveshaft retaining clips been changed yet?

I would take a guess that they may not, but this is the second time this has occurred. That is why her mechanic has judged the gearbox splines may be worn.

I have asked, and last time they just slid the shafts back in, so it sounds like she may get away with replacing the retention clips. Easy job? Are the clips available easily enough?

Dont know if the clips are avail separately from BMW, but I dont think they are anything to special should be able to get them from any Cv joint repairer. Otherwise I have some here I can post.
