Post subject:  timing chain job
Done a timing chain 9n the old mans r56 cooper s.

Fairly straight forward job.

Total cost $1000 including timing lock tools.

Total time 5 hours.

Not bad considering bmw quoted $3000 and 8 hours.


Got the tool now so if anyone needs a timing chain done in perth.....

Had a mate ask me yesterday what the go was with that, he has a Midas store and they have one in making a hell of a noise from the timing chain. I will give him your number as they were looking to outsource it.

Hi everyone, since selling my 1967 Deluxe and buying a 2008 Clubman S, I have been a lot less active on here but definitely not less active under the bonnet. I've done quite a few small jobs like the thermostat housing, plugs and leads etc myself and now it's up for the dreaded timing chain job. I've done a heap of research, bought some parts like the timing chain kit and tools and have now chickened out of doing the actual job myself. Can anyone recommend a shop in or near Hoppers or Werribee (Vic) that could do it?

There was a guy on here some time back from down Melbourne way that was a qualified Bini mechanic , cant remember his user name , have a look through this section .

We do the complete job for $1450 including a Iwis chain & genuine guides & tensioner.....most of the time the reason for chain stretch & fatigue is caused by running low on oil.....keep an eye on the oil level

Its a great design if you have the mechanical ability. The chain and guide assembly comes out the top in a single assembly.

That said I was dreading the problem with my R56 JCW but it was all good as I changed the oil and filter every 7.5K
