I was thinking 270 would be the best suited cam for what im after. Im still not sure whether to stick with the 1100 or go to a big bore motor or high revving 998, i think 998 would be a step backwards. How expensive are non-s 1275 short blocks in general? I would probably start from scratch and build the engine myself if i did take that route. The car will be used for general around town driving and sport events on weekends. So i am mainly after reliability but still a performer if possible.

998s are OK but are at least 10% down on torque to start with.

A 1275 would be my choice. Post in the wanted section?
Dunno what they're worth now - last one I got years ago, I paid 100 bucks for (basket case).. :twisted:

How about doing the brakes first? I do believe the RTA frown upon 1275s with drums (not to mention twin carb 1098s with single leading shoe drums!)

I doubt they would pass a 1275 with drums. First thing they look for is front discs, on all the ones I've built. :wink:

Stupid thing is, in theory you could build a demon 1220 motor with 100HP? and it would pass rego with drums..

well i will be putting the discs on once i have reconditioned them, then next will come the engine.

I ran a Waggott 18/58 cam in my 1st 850, way back in 1965.. :wink:

Waggott Eng, and Ken Waggott are kaput now, aren't they? (probably pushing up daisies...) :lol:

Negative, the older Waggotts might have passed away but the business moved out of Sydney a few years back and is now being run by a son. Engine, head and cam work is done.

Hmmmm, a friend of mine had a 997 Cooper around about 67 ish, I think he put a 16/56 Cam in and it worked beautifully on a close ratio box.

:roll: Hmmm indeed, how about the British Motor Corporation put the 16/56 cam into the 997 and he put a "649" in? Does that sound right? He also ran 4:1 fuel improver (methanol!!) Man my memory is shot, it was only about 37 year ago!!! :shock:
