 Post subject: Twin 1 1/2 SU manifold

Hi members

I am currently restoring my 1970 Mk2 Cooper S. I am putting a kent 266 cam in and med 1.3 rockers. I have a pair of 1 1/4 SUs and manifold and set of 1 1/2s with manifold. The manifold intake ports may have been opened up to suit the 1 1/2s as the AEG347 casting number from what I can glen after much google time seem to have been fitted to 1 1/4 coopers. Is this the correct manifold or at least will it be ok to use. I see reproduction manifolds for sale specifically for twin 1 1/2s. Do I need to buy one of these instead of the 347?

There's a list of factory inlet manifolds here - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=89247

To fit 1 1/2" (HS4) SU's to the Australian Police specification engine the standard Cooper S 1 1/4" manifold (AEG573) was used, after a rework. The latter involved relocating the carby mounting studs to suit the HS4 diagonal arrangement and opening up the port on the carby side to 1 1/2".

Unlike the AEG573 the AEG347 doesn't appear to have a large enough platform to accommodate the HS4 angled mounting studs, so you may need a different manifold.

The AEG347 has vertical studs. H4 Su's will fit but if your carbs are HS4's then you will need a manifold like the AEG573 which can have studs fitted at a 45 deg angle.

Whatever manifold you choose can be opened up a little if needed to match the carby.

Forty old years ago I fitted some MGB 1 1/2" SU's to a Cooper S manifold using some lynx (?) adapters which bolted up to the vertical studs and gave you the options for 2x diagonal or 4x diagonal bolted SU's ie 1 1/2" or 1 3/4". I don't know if they are still available - someone may. Just an option for you. See pic below, I will be rebuilding these as part of the restoration.

I have 2 of the correct adaptors which look like they would work quite well & neatly. You can have them for price of postage if you would like to try them
