Hey,

I picked up a 25D (more than 2 handfuls) for 25 bucks. It's got new points and capacitor and has been cleaned up fairly well. Dunno about the state of the vacuum advance, how do I test that out?

Will it go better than my 29D on a 998/1098 or should I save it for a 1275? Also which of the two is better for a petronics setup?

Any Lucas dizzy is OK if in good condition. But if you want to fit a Pertronix, go with a 25D or 45D. 29D is a bit of an orphan- Pertronix have no listing for it.

Check the thread on electronic ignition in Mini Chat.
$40 will get you a Nissan Pulsar N12 (Hitachi) electronic dizzy, coil and leads, and it will take you less than an hour to modify and fit it to your Mini. Cheaper than Pertronix..
There's a good thread on it at MiniPortal too.
I'm doing 4 of 'em at the moment. 3 down, 1 to go... :lol:

To check the vacuum advance just suck on it, see if it moves. You'll know if there is a hole in the diaphragm.

I run a 29D with Aldon electic ignition (brilliant in my opinion), but there isn't a huge amount of difference between the 29D and 25D. Although doesn't the 25D have the vacuum advance timing adjuster on it? Sounds useful. Other than that the only differences will be in the static advance and the advance springs, both of which can be changed/modified to give the right curve.

In standard form I wouldn't have thought you'd notice the difference between the two.

I have a pertronix 24/25D ignitor in my 29D... fits no prob. although it would be around $150 cheaper to fit the pulsar dizzy.

re the Pulsar dizzys- the bearings feel like rollers or something. There is no slack at all in any of the 4 I've just modified. Doesn't feel at all like a Lucas... :lol:
Should give less spark scatter as a result.

OK Doc, now we know you've just included another marvel into your freakin databank of knowledge, have ya used one to check the advance curve yet? Someone mentioned it was pretty close, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I gave Gareth_1330 his Pulsar one yesterday, he'll take it to work this week and stick it on Ivan's antique dizzy graphing machine. I asked him to post results here...

I must say the advance mechanism in these feels real nice- when you twist the rotor and let go, it springs right back- unlike 90% of the Lucas ones out there which have rooted springs inside.. :lol:

Bobtel and Charlibah are both running them (in 1098 & 998) and they swear it has transformed their cars' performance. 8)

Rather than put my Hitachi into the wife's A+ motor, I'll throw it into my modded 1310S motor and see if it goes better than with the 45D/Pertronix combo. :wink:

OK so I just trawled through the other thread and i've come up with the following summary:


D4R85 comes from the N12 Nissan Pulsar - Manual
D4R83 comes from the N12 Nissan Pulsar - Automatic

Quick google and it looks the N12 were sold from 82-86 but Marcel reckons the 1.6L engined Pulsars are the ones to look for. I'm not sure but I'd say they're off the later models.

I'm going to go and find one on thursday. Are they any good for 998 or 1098 engines?

yes, they are great in both a 998 and a 1098. Bobtel and Charlibah are running them. I'm about to put one in my 1310S.
I was told D4R83 was the manual, and 85 was auto. Anyhow, we've got one of each to try. Stay tuned to this station.. :wink:

I was pretty much trying to summarise the facts from that thread and Marcel's Hitachi Dizzy page So I'm not sure who's correct, you or Bnicho and in any case I dunno which would be better out of a manual or auto dizzy other than to assume that a manual might be better since our mini's are manual.

When do you think you will post results?
