Dewey,
I'm gonna spin mine up on the dizzygraph Thursday, and I know Gareth's already run his.
You are probably right on the p/no.s- I couldn't remember where I saw them but it was Bnicho's thread.

Should post results Thurs nite.

If you're gonna buy one, get whichever you find- the advance can be reduced by welding the advance stop and filing it back.

Auto dizzy probably runs a little more advance than manual, but who knows what effective advance your Lucas has now after 35 years... :P

Well Gareth ran the Pulsar D4R85 dizzy up on Ivan's `Vane' dizzy graph this morning.
Its tach doesn't work with electronic dizzys- so we hooked up a power timing light, set advance point zero at tickover (maybe 50 rpm) then spun it up to preset 2000 dizzy rpm and then preset 4000 dizzy rpm.

The D4R85 (manual) dizzy got 12* (at dizzy = 24* at crank) at 2000 dizzy rpm (= 4000 rpm at crank). Spinning it to 4000 dizzy rpm made no difference to the reading.

Corresponding figure for Gareth's D4R83 (auto) dizzy was 16* at dizzy = 32* at crank at the same speeds.

So the D4R83 (auto) one is close to a 1275S it terms of advance but it happens at 4000 rpm not 7000.

The D4R85 (manual) one is close to a 1275LS or 998 stock 45D dizzy, and is better suited to a well modified motor (like mine....) It would need 8* more static advance than the auto one for the same max advance.

Clear as mud?? :?

It would be nice to run one up on a stationary motor with degree wheel attached and a working tacho... or on a rolling road.

OK, doc, I have a mildly worked 1293(I dont know how much has actually been done to it). Which out of those two would be your best suggestion for me to chase?

I'd get an 85 (manual) but if you get the 83 (auto) try it, you can always stick a bit of weld on the limit stop, then file it back...

OK the D4R85 dizzy is in my 1310 now- with the Nissan coil and plug gaps upped to .040" is fires 'em OK to 8000 rpm.. :P

I've set it to the same full advance point as before (35* at 4,500 rpm)

Looking at the timing marks with the strobe today, it seems more stable than the 45D and Pertronix was. :D
