Yes as Doug replied in the MM thread, when viewed with vac can at RH top, the LH terminal is blue, = <-ve>. :wink:

Ive just gone thru this topic to find an answer...... and ended up having more questions instead of the answer :lol:

OK..... so..... lets get things straight.....

It is said that:

D4R83 = Auto = 16 degrees
D4R85 = Manual = 12 degrees

Then it says:

Some autos had D4R85's fitted (auto requires different dizzy degrees to auto)??

And then..

the 2 digits after D4R85 (D4R85 - xx) represent the degrees/curve, and those 2 numbers can change

ALL I want to know is: What is right? Can the dizzy be opened up to reveal a stamped number that represents the degrees to end all confusion?

And my original question that I couldnt find an answer for: Would the ET Pulsar turbo distributor have a different advance curve? (I would assume YES)..... would THAT curve be better for supercharging than a regular D4R85?

......actually, I think the ET pulsar turbo is a different model car with a different dizzy that might not even fit. :? Dammit... who knows.

Generally the automatics had a D4R83 dizzy but I have found some with D4R85 instead. Maybe original fitment, maybe....NOT.

The -** numbers at the end refer to the VAC ADVANCE spec, not the centrifugal advance we are interested in.
Vac advance is an economy fitment- it does SFA at full throttle.

These days I look for D4R85s- as they have less centrifugal advance, I've found they allow more static advance, and give better low speed response- without getting too much full advance at high rpm.
Max advance point on both the 83 and 85 is at around 4000 (engine) rpm. :wink:

I would like to say thank you.

Thanks to everyone that have posted information about installing a Pulsar dizzy to a Mini.

A special thanks to "drmini in aust" for all of his information he supplies everyone.

I installed a D4R85 into my 1380, it go's like a scared cat.

Just to add something to this thread. Can anyone give me a parts number for the rotor arm to suit an 85 dizzy either original nissan manufacture or a Bosch equivalent maybe??

Cheers,

TasTYger :? :?

Sorry no I don't know, I would take to Repco or Autobarn and ID them.

One point though- I've seen 2 different rotors used, one has a screw through it to hold it to the dizzy shaft. :wink:

One ausmini member recently had a Pulsar dizzy fail on his newly rebuilt engine. The top bush wore badly and the `star' or reluctor ring then hit the polepiece, dragging the dizzy around. :cry:
After doing a post mortem it was apparent that the top shaft bush was dry as a bone, the shaft had some rust on it there too.
Looks like no oil had been in there lately, maybe the dead Pulsar it came from had been parked a while. However, this dizzy had been run in his Mini before with the old 1098 in.

Both GR and I agree that in a Mini, it could do with an oil hole drilled just above the lower bush. A 1.5mm hole is plenty big.
So far, I've drilled one this way. Both mine will get done next time they are out.
If you decide to fit a Pulsar dizzy, please strip, clean and lube it first. It might need some oilz.....:wink:

Will I have any trouble with an 85 in a stock 998A+ engine? They seem to be more common over the 83?

An 85 is better in any A series than the 83, which really does have a bit much centrifugal advance with its 16* plate.
See my other thread below re modding to suit A+.

Chong just posted this in his Lillee's 1330 rebuild thread (page 17)
"I am running a modified D4R83 pulsar dissy. I don't mean modified to accept a drive dog from a mini, BUT really modified as in change the advance curve to suit a mini. This is a BIG DEAL people so listen up! The advance curve on a pulsar dissy (either D4R83 or 85) have the wrong curve. They have far too much advance far too slowly. The result is that if you tune a stock pulsar dissy to have the correct curve at high revs, lets say 4000rpm, then you will lose up to 10ft/lbs of torque on the low end as the dissy is running way off down low. If you set it for the right advance down low, it will be way off at high revs which can be DISATEROUS. Be careful! I highly recommend if you are thinking about changing dissy to get your points dissy serviced with new points, rotor, cap, or get a pulsar one modified for the right curve. "

So what is the right curve and how/where /what do we do to fix it?
