hey guys i was just reading an article about ram tubes and it got me tihnking about whether a ram tube on a single su setup would be any better than the stock airfilter....or would a new filter element or something work better?? does anyone know the costs of these things....i just thought a ram tube with a sock might do the job but be cheaper than a new filter etc.... cheers -jimmy |

sorry...had a brainfade and forgot to mention that the clubby is in need of a tune (&service for that matter   ) and i thought that i might aswell have a look at a 'performance' filter of some kind before i get it tuned rather than buy a K&N or something in a few weeks and have t have it tuned again

I used to have an HS2 carb on my 1098 and I found it went quite well for what was afterall a pissy carb. I had used a Redline filter, with a modified backplate to fit a ramtube. I reckon it went harder than a stock filter, but you'll need a needle change (I ran an E3, but I can guarantee it wasn't perfect). For an HS4 you'll probably have to run a ram tube and a sock, I'm not sure of any filter combinations where there is room for a tube. Both ram tubes I bought cost around $50 each. Make sure you read Vizard to make sure you get a ram tube with the right roll etc, if you want it to work. I heard today that some bloke in Sydney who made them has retired or something. So now my local Mini guy has to source them from England. Anto. |

I bought a ramtube in from MiniSpares to put on the Clubbie's HS4 with a sock. But it's too bloody long- the sock kinks on the firewall...

My HS4 had a one inch or so ramtube and sock and the sock pushed through the firewall - but I have a wacking great hole there for the speedo so it didn't matter. Not much of a firewall - my carb backfired when I started it earlier today and I knew all about it - and I was *inside* the car

One of the dudes that I met at the show on sunday had a 1330 with twin 1 1/2 (I think, or twin 1 3/4) and he had ram tubes and socks that fit, red ones... Just thought I'd mention it |

Yeah they fit OK on twins... manifold is shorter.

you can put small ram tubes inside a K&N filter. The original works cars had fairly long rams on twin Su's |

From memory though the works cars had long tubes but no filter (not recommended unless you are sponsered by BMC and they supply you with new engines!) I wouldn't have thought you'd have room for a stub stack inside a K&N. I know you can fit an offset base tapered filter without hitting the bulkhead but I thought that was about it. |

K&N actually made and sold real short ones designed for these filters. Saw them in Mini Spares catalog. |

Well there you go - my parts supplier didn't think they existed - but he stocks the green stuff (is that it?) version of the filter I don't think it's by K&N. Now I just wish Lynx made similar stub stacks to go on my Dell'orto! I've got the tiny 440S offset filter now but no stub stacks! |

I'm about to do a `production run' of my `real short' Dellorto/Weber stubstacks, so I'll put you down for two 40's if you like. They will fit inside your filter (I use the same). I'm making some 45's too. No they won't fit an SU... Prices next week....
