 Post subject: clutch springs.

hey do i need a clutch return spring on my clubby. i never used to have one but some blokes are telling me i need one, what do i do.

put one on other wise you may pop the centre of the slave cylinder out

If you don't put one on, the little spring inside the slave cylinder will push the clutch arm out, so the thrust bearing is spinning all the time. That will root it pretty quickly.. :cry:

i've been driving without one for about a year now and my clutch seems ok.....

i only took it off cos we were having some problems letting the clutch out and my mechanic said not to worry about it....???

Most cars that have automatic clutch adjustment (eg Hillman Imp!) have a carbon release `bearing', not a ball bearing. Standard Mini one is not designed to rub and spin all the time.. so good luck! :wink:

IF it's the same bearing as in a Verto clutch (which do self-adjust) maybe you are in luck, but I think they use a different bearing..

You a town boy? Out here in Bungle Bungles we need to keep as many spares as poss for our Minis or we'd be up the creek without a croc shovel.

how ya doing jim,
its not a very hard job to do,and it is not expencive at all,so ya may as well just bust out the long nose plyers,and pick ya self up a spring and wack it on in 5 mins, :D ,i did 1 on a cooper S,it was HELL coz the servo was rite where i was trying to work,and there was brakes lines all in the wamand as you no,the roundie has a MUCH smaller engine bay than your clubby,if not bring your fine arse mini around again on a WET day,ill wack 1 on for ya and we can do some more handbrakies :lol: like when we scared the crap outa them little shits going past my driveway :shock: the look on there face,PRICELESS

I hear you can save a lot of weight by running without the spring :)
That's about the only benefit of not having one. I haven't heard of the clutch/slave cylinder dying because of not using a spring, but really, why wouldn't you use one?

hey andrew, when i saw u i had all ready got the spring when ireplaced the clutch kit. i'm not sure if it helps with anything but it's just peace of mind having one there.
