Post subject:  13" wheels and flares

I know this has probably been asked 1000 times before but I'm going to ask it again. I have a 1976 Clubman S that I am currently rebuilding and I plan on fiting 13" wheels to it. There is a lot of debate about whether doing its a good idea or not, but the fact remains I'm going to do it so thats not the problem. The problem I have is knowing how much metal I have to cut away to fit the things in the first place. The questions I have are as follows.

On the clubman S they have the extra little bit of sticky out metal over the wheel archs for the original flares, does this have to be totally cut off?

Do the wheel archs have to be cut to be made to be any higher?

How much of the front gaurd needs to be cut at the very front?

Anything need to be done to the back at all?

Whats the best flares to cover a set of 13" x 6"?

Think thats all I am searching for at the moment, I am sick of just getting a different answer every where I go, its driving me nuts. So if you can think of anything else that might help which I haven't mentioned then by all means throw it my way. I'm just trying to find out exactly what has to be done as I'm not really in the mood for stuffing it up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Toddles, if ya can find a copy of Keeping Your Mini Alive number 1 from 1999, it has a step by step guide to upgrading from 12 inch to 13 inch wheels. Dunno if it will be that much help, but thought I'd mention it.

It states that you only need to remove the old flares and fit the new ones to the back, but the front needs metal ground out, and bent etc. Still looks damn scary to me, even with the guide though.

ahh... i have experience here.......

My front suspension is at almost standard height, but with my front arches i was required to remove 2 inches (50mm) of metal from the VERY front edge (almost up to the bumper mounting lip), into the A panel - 100mm past the seam.

Basically, draw a line around your wheel arch 50mm above the lip and that is where you will be cutting.

If you intend on going lower, expect to remove more AND mount your arches higher than normal.....

At the back, no mods were required HOWEVER i have installed some bump stops on my trailing arms to limit the upward movement of the rear wheels. If a rear wheel fouls on a fibreglass arch, the arch will break.

If you intend on going lower at the rear, be prepared to cut and weld new inner guards (or part of at least)... cos you'll be cutting into the cabin space.

WARNING - once you start, there's NO turning back!!!!!

Check out Calvers Corner: http://www.calverscorner.com

He has the details on how much to cut out, how to rework the arch, etc... (Go to the bottom of the page: under WHEELS)

Plus he has a heap of other Mini technical articles.

He writes the tech pages for one of the Pommy Mini mags.

So where would I be able to hunt down a copy of Keeping You Mini Alive no.1 from?

I will be trying to keep it standard height as minis are low enough as it is, any lower and it will be too much of a pain to get over speed bumps and what not. Might drop the back a bit though to make it level though, will have to see.

But does anyone know if you have to remove the little metal flare off the Clubman S if you want to go 13" or will the new flare just sit over the top of it. Surely with 13" rims and low profile tyres there shouldn't be too much of an increase in the overal size of the tyre + rim when compared to 10".

I am going to 8.4" vented discs and will be whacking in a suzuki Gti Engine. The car is already painted but cuting the archs shouldn't be a problem. We have already put in a second tank after it was painted so it shouldnt't so cuting doesn't really worry us. Just have to take my time and do it once and do it right, hence the reason i am trying to find as much information as possible.

I want to get a set of 13x6 superlites so what sort of offsets can you get and what is the best offset to get? Considering standard ride height, vented discs.

Thanks for all your input so far guys, if you have anything else to add then by all means go ahead.

Don't let anyone tell you they are the same size!

175/50-13 are at least 60mm bigger diameter than a 165/70-10.
I just measured the pair of Kumhos on my boat trailer, and the Bridgestone SF226s on our Clubbie.

I'd say ALL the Mini S flare's lip would have to go.

Hey why not fit 12x6s, they look similar but there's little or no butchery involved..

Yeah I was going to go for 12" but I could never find any in 12x6 only 12x5. So if I found some 12x6 then I would probably go them. I love the look of 13" but am not all that keen about the rest of the stuff that goes with them, at least if I get 12 I can always go to 13 but if I get 13, there isn't really any going back. I love the look of superlites, but as far as I know you can't get 12x6 superlites so does anyone know of any good 12x6 rims that are out there? some pictures would be good. Thanks again for all the advice.

Whatever you do, dont just go to wheel and tyre places (like tyrepower, or Bobe Jane Tmart) as they dont have much MINI stuff to choose from..... their market is more like.... your mums car....

MINI SPECIALISTS would sell more of the different sizes, or have ACCESS to more at least.... they're your best bet

Try ringing Performance Wheels (03) 9706 4244 (Peter).

From what I've been told the 12 x 6 wheels don't come out any further under your arches than 12 x 5.5 they only go in further (if you know what I mean). Bit hard to describe. Therefore, doesn't seem worth getting 12 x 6's.

There are also many pics and info in Keeping Your Mini Alive 5. This is the current release of KYMA. Page 70. We have sportspac arches fitted on both our minis. I would use 13 x 7 Superlites from Performance if you want to fill these type of arches. They fit fantastic. One of our friends has these on his car.

Hope this helps.

Not that I would buy them, but.. do these 13x7s fit on without spacers?

I would love to be able to put on 13" but there are so many different opinions of what you actually have to do to fit the wheels that its all becoming rather confusing. 13x7" look really good but I would rather stick with 13x6" as I have been told 13x7 don't handle all that well and they also weigh a lot which plays silly buggers with your suspension.

Have the people who have fited 13" uprated any part of their suspension at all? any part what so ever you have changed then name it.

With the sport pack arches did you get a fitting guild template like you see in the mini mags or is this an only in england thing? Anyone know a good site which has a large range of differene flares to look at?

Lastly, are there any flares people don't recommend geting or which ones do people think are the best looking/fiting.

All the help I have gotten so far has been really good, thanks a lot guys and girls.
