There's really not much difference in performance between 10's and 12's. Only thing when it comes to performance is that if you were racing, there are better performing rubber out for 10's. So you have to factor in the costs for 8.4" discs and 12" rims and tyres, or 7.5" discs with new rubber on your current rims.

discs to fit 10" wheels would be harder to find and more expensive than the larger discs for 12" wheels.

I haven't driven anything with smaller than 13" wheels for so long can't remember what it felt like to drive on 10" or 12".

ive driven minis with 10s,,,12s,,,,and now ive got 13's.
would have to say i like the 13s the best...ive just spent a wack of money to get my car driving right and finaly it is...have had adjustable rear end stuff put on and it now makes my car handle like it should as befour when i had hydro on the rear and dry susp in the front the car diddnt go to good...lots of grip and if you have the money you can fit big brakes on too as theres plenty of room under 13...ive got metro turbo units on my car with ap racing 4 spot calipers..brakes very well i must say...but the down side is the cost....but iether way a good mini brake set up will cost you around $1.200...and if i was you dont bother with the honda brakes and what not...ive been in a mini with these and ive spoken to mini specailist at link automotive who have driven cars with these allso and they dont feel to good...stick with mini stuff if you can aford it...and if you cant ...save like i did...

Another vote for the 10's here. Ive found they are better - handling wise

Ive seen broken gearboxes due to the bigger wheels fitted. Heavier, more strain on the drivetrain etc. especially with an A series engine

its up to you what size you want

yes, as above, i vote 3.....

10 inch =
Better acceleration,
Better handling, slower steering response.
Softer ride (they absorb some of the shock from the road)
Wont foul on body work.
7.5 inch disc brakes $$$$$$$

12 inch =
Higher top speed, slower acceleration, lower RPM at 60km/h (saves fuel)
Better steering response, but loses the handling
Tyres harder to find / cost more
Bumpier ride (they absorb less of the shock from the road) (some of us like a Bumpier ride  )
8.4 inch disc brakes a bit cheaper ( mini moke )
Might foul on the body work when turning (if you are lowered) may need to cut the front gaurds.....

Mini lite 10 inch rims look 100% cool and are about $450 new - without tyres

It all depends on whether you really want to go faster, or look bigger...

i would have thought the bigger the wheels the more surface area = more traction?

`red850' has a 1400 turbo- was doings 14's at Eastern Creek strip, he's now gone from 13" back to 10" (a008s) on 6" rims to get better traction. He reckons 13" don't have enough bag in the sidewalls for good grip off the line... and it handles better now, too.

I was having this exact conundrum when I was looking into new wheels. 12" wheels apparently handle better than 10s coz of less tyre wall (thus less tyre flex) and 10" wheels are better coz they are lighter etc etc. I'd say go for the ones you like the look of, and can afford. My mind was made up easily coz I found some 10" Performance Superlights at the right price. If you're not driving hard out on the track I don't think there is much difference. Of course I had the benefit of already having 7.5" disc brakes, so that didn't come into the equation. A set of 7.5" brakes can be expensive, but a set of 8.4" brakes AND 12" wheels is probably more expensive. And bear in mind that it is likely you would have to buy new tyres for the 12" wheels anyway :)

Personally I am keeping my 10's, because the larger in diameter you go without altering your gearing, your engine will be working harder to accelerate and get up to speed.

I always laugh when I see a JAP BUZZBOX that was designed and engineered with 13's, running 16's or even 17's. These cars have to work so damn hard to accelerate, because Rice Boys go for looks over performance, and don't alter their gearing with the large wheels.

Still, having said all this, you do what you feel is right. If you want the look of bigger wheels (which looks pretty good) then go for it. Just take all this info on board so when people question you, you can be a tyre/wheel boffin and regurgitate this info.

Anton.

Ricebox...... thats my mazda...... bought with 13's, fitted with 17's, looking for 18's........ the car didnt come with performance anyway...... when i raced it around Mallala, the tyres were smoking cos they were rubbing on the guards and suspension when cornering!!!!

Check this out..... The day i was at mallala,

1969 mini 1380cc on 10's did 1min27,
1985 porsche 911 on 19's did 1min30, (my bosses car - he races heaps)
my 1997 mazda 121 (1500cc) on 17's does 1min35, (without the stereo gear)
and crappy nissan silvia turbos on 15's do 1min38...... (bad drivers maybe??)
all road registered daily drivers......

mallala is all about the cornering.....

The only quick Minis around Wakefield Pk on 13" wheels I've seen are race cars using 13" Hoosier slicks on front and 10" on back, on 8" ? wide rims.
One advantage of 13s is you can fit humungous front brakes.. but these were not street cars.
I think 12s are OK on a street Mini but there's not a great choice of rubber.. I'll stick to 10s with A008s. 8)

10 inch wheels are definitely the way to go, both for handling and retro good looks! Tyres and rims are not too bad a price either, but you may be running on one kidney to get front discs!

Honda City/Civic discs & calipers $100/set at the wreckers, + a few bits to make.
We've got 2 sets on cars now and another being done soon! 8)

<edit> `animal' up in Qld is now running Accord ventilated ones under 13x6s..
