Thats strange with the cams getting mixed up, Im sure in my 8v head they only fit in the one way. i.e. impossible to mix up. Is the 16v head different?

yeah you cant mix up the 8v cams,,, they`re caps are such that it`s imposible to fit them wrong

the 16v caps are the same set-up inlet & exhaust so it`s an easy mistake for the un-initiated

when Steve rang me about it i told him that i`d almost bet that`s whats happened with his head :-)

Still creeping along, there was a fair bit of angst setting up the cam timing and getting the require valve to piston clearance. So after a call to MattR I set it up as suggested 2.5mm lift, "On the Rock"

If you are like me and don't know what that means, here's a non-technical version. When the #1 cyclinder is at Top Dead Centre on the firing stroke the inlet & exhaust values at #4 are open 2.5mm.

In the pic above it was just before the 2.5mm lift.

At that I had valve to piston clearance, but not a lot, so at that point I opted for a thicker head gasket and had a 2mm gasket made. This has given me better clearance and got the CR at just on 11.0:1

Then started to bolt it together.

Now for the fuel and spark, which will be a Mircotech set up.

What's your plan for an alternator and oil filter/pipes?

I was going to use the reco one off the 1098. The oil filter will be a spin on, also off the 1098. I was going to get a MED billet one with the braided hose, but it won't work any better than the on off the 1098, so I thought the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Its looking great mate!
The bmw head on an A-series looks like it was meant to be. So natural.
Its a nice exhaust too. Is it custom or off the shelf?

Well, it's been 12months to the day since I purchased the 1100s bock and crank. The last couple of months has involved waiting for other people to do their thing for the build.

I'm now off the road, the 1098 engine is out, reluctantly, it's been going so well and has got better with each additional mile. With still just 3k miles on the rebuild.

Getting ready to lift the ''Twinky'' in. Just need a little more alloy welding on the radiator for the by-pass and heater returns. Then wiring up the Microtech ECU and plumbing the fuel system.

Sneek peek so far.
