You really need to change the title on that vid, anyone searching for bmw head minis would never find it.
Apart from that it's a nice engine.

BACK ON TRACK!!!

As stated above, off to GR's this morning for an expert measure up (CC'ing the head and pistons).

As expected I wasn't too far out with my mearsuring. I thought I needed to find another 8cc, which I thought I could get with 3mm H/G, in copper. But, after talking to MattR and Graham, the proper way to do it was dish the pistons.

Graham did some calculations on the first piston, machined it and refitted it for another measure. The total including dish, fly cuts and deck height gave us 10cc's. Head CC 19cc's (a long way from the standard 28cc's hey Matt) and 4cc's for the H/G.

Giving me the desired C/R of 11.4:1

GR machining one of the dishes.

And the difference between the before and after.

And, out of there by lunch time with it assembled. A huge thank you to Graham, whom I'm sure could have been doing something else on a Saturday morning.

Hope those flash new special head gaskets aren't far away

Thats so prettttty!!

Excellent work mate. GR sounds like a pretty good bloke knocking those pistons down on a saturday for you

More bits have arrived and ready for the dry build.

theminiman's twin cam mini headgasket. Looking like a BK450, but with the right holes.

MED Ultra light steel flywheel, AP racing clutch and comp cover. Assembled and balanced. With a Hi-Torque pre-engaged starter.

The dry build went along fine until I couldn't get the pre tune timing set as per Matt's build guide. So an out of business hours call to Matt to find out where I was going wrong. Right here, I apologize to Matt for interupting his weekend. It turned out the inlet and exhaust cams had managed to exchange places. I hope it was me and not the head reconditioner :? .

With the start up timing, set as per the build guide, everything clears, providing the timing belt never breaks

Once this lot put on a few more kilo's I'll have my engine mangement set up.

Dalmeny,
I have the same MED flywheels in the Twini. Purchased about a year ago.
Checked them out and found the diaphragm springs did not sit flat when assembled.
The following link explains this:
http://www.minimania.com/classic-mini-c ... cfm?id=153.
Matt would give some advice on the need or otherwise for this.
I need to take about 1.5mm from the backing plate posts to make the spring flat. I would be interested to see if yours is the same. Not sure if this is needed to allow for some clutch plate wear.

I'll do some checking. It is assembled, as in bolted together, I don't know if you can see the spring sitting flat like that. GR might have an answer as well he said he has used the MED flywheel.

I have printed up the minimania stuff I'll have a read.

Have had the same problem with all the MED (and others) that I have used
Varies fom 1 to 1.5 mm needed off the legs
Also check that the stepped bolts dont bottom out after machining the legs

KJN,
Do you machine the legs, so that the spring is flat with a new clutch plate?
What happens when the clutch plate wears a bit.

Dalmeny, have a chat to Kevin the Dr, as he has commented on this in the past.

I machine the legs so the spring is flat with a new clutch plate
As the plate wears the clamp pressure becomes slightly less
Doesnt seem to be a problem even in our race engines

I do the same as Ken does (but when machining s/h flywheels and backplates).
Max pressure is achieved with the spring flat when assembled.

It's strange though that they need this much taken off with NEW parts, someone at MED has obviously stuffed up the dimensions.

the herefords(mums?) at the back look like they have more than enough condition

place looking good after rain.

Again nooby question - i understand taking meat out of top piston to change cc. - in the photo are they scalloped? please assist me in the understanding of their design

cheers Darryl

Yeah, I thought the dish would be concave. GR's cutting tool has a round end and the dish is actually flat and after a few cuts that round cutter leaves a curved edge around the outer edge of the dish. Like the cornise on your ceiling at home. You would have to ask someone more knowledgable than me about SQWISH

cheers Darryl
