Make sure you figure out why the timing changed, assuming that's the cause...

The gasket probably had to put up with a fair bit of variation during the initial trial and error stages.

Hi Dalmeny,
I was wondering how the engine was going and if you would do it again?
I have just visited the Specialist Components stand at IMM2014 and was very impressed with their versions of the Twinky. Especially the S/C version.

Hi Michael

Yeah, it's up and running again. Would I do it again :| , probably. But, there are a couple of things I would do different. First, use better throttle bodies, if you can afford an extra $2k on top of the build. Secondly, use a better ECU, the Microtech is less adjustable than some of the others well known brands. But, in saying that it is fun to drive. I am probably a bit pedantic about making it the best it can be. IMO if you modify an A series motor to this extent it's going to need on going tinkering and obvious maintenance, over and above the normal oil change and filters.

The S/C motors look the goods, but I could never justify the cost.

Hi Dalmeny,
Thanks for the reply and I would like to discuss further with you if OK when I return from Europe at the end of August?
Cheers
Michael

Anytime Michael. A sit down chat would cover more than you can put into a few sentences. BTW, I did see the photo of you drooling over the S/C engine at the IMM.

Enjoy the rest of your trip :)

Just wondering how the engine is going 3 years down the track.

Yeah, been on the road for a while now. It really took a long time to sort it out. The only real mechanical problem was the two blown head gaskets. And, that would be nearly two years ago. Then I fitted the MLS Cometic gasket and it's been good since (touch wood). In the early days I had enormous problems starting it, so the ring gear and pinion on the starter had to be replaced early last year through plenty of wear and tear. The starting problem was addressed with the Microtech ECU being remapped to specifically talk to the BMW TPS (took him 2 weeks and $2,000) to address that problem. Was also getting a voltage drop whilst starting, so also fitted multi strand MIG Earth cable for the main power cable from the battery. Fuel consumption is really good, but never really carried out a check. Overall it's going great, wouldn't hesitate to jump in and drive it anywhere and feel confident that I'll make back home. Actually runs near perfect Air Fuel in suburbia (12.5-13.5). It a shame most of the time it's cruising highway speeds up and down the Hume.

Would love to come for a sticky beak and chat at some point. I've seen this around in 2013. only now really thinking of doing the same.
