When you rebuild your engine, you will need to do a big order from the UK of bits and bobs eg gaskets, bolts, covers, studs, manifolds, etc.
When you do this, add a cooper s 7.5" conversion kit to the order.

Easiest and cheapest option. Just bolt it on.

by the time u bullit proof your little reving engine u might as well go turbo, , so i cant see how this build is going to less ,maybe only the purchase of a block and crank, the rest will still be as expensive. plus more performance parts are for the 1275 range.
will be nice to see who it goes either way.

He mentioned in the original post he wanted it to sound good, now I know that's subjective but personally I think a turbo will muffle the exhaust too much.

Ignore all this hogwash that small bores are a waste of time.

I had a 998 (well 1032, 998 +040) on a 3.44 (10" wheels) that surprised many people, I know a certain backyardknowitallmini mechanic who gave it a big thumbs up.

I could keep up with many 1098s & 1275s no worries.

Thing is with the small bores is that it is the "package" has to be just right and if you're off too far in any dept (fueling, cam, comp, timing, etc) then they punish you severely.

A GOOD cyl head is essential. I had a well modded 295 to base my engine around.

cheers,

Jacob

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the bmw twin-cam conversions yet. As mods for the 998 go, that seems to be the best out there.

And as for the whole why-mod-a-998-when-you-can-mod-a-1275, you could say the same thing about minis in general - why modify a mini when you can modify a torana? The reason why is because not everybody wants a decked out 1380, it's fun to try something different. I'm interested in seeing what can be done with a 998.

ahhhhh....but they have! on the first page. see below

What else do you want to do to it? Do you have a power figure in mind? Or an application? A large head will flow well but kill airspeed, not ideal for around town, same as a large cam. A turbo is not a bad route when the big N/A bill hits your wallet, and can be more efficient on fuel.

Fit a BMW twin cam, similar engine size flows much better and is crossflow to boot. Again, expensive. Boring it out will increase oil consumption (or so I am lead to believe, the imp pistoned minis supposedly did) and probably increase blow by, contaminating the oil your gearbox lives in.

Having an idea of what you want to achieve will encourage useful discussion rather than 100 different ideas with as many different applications.

the problem with that is the cost.

I enjoy the discussion, seeing what CAN be done with 998's. I love it, as 1275's are sometimes hard/expensive to acquire

and cheaper than a V8. I have had V8's for a few years and buying one cyclinder head or one webber makes it so much cheaper for more smiles :D

Twinky just looks too complicated looking at the Phase 2 topic on this site.
