I love a tuned 998, and the parts are cheap, including blocks and cranks!
I’ll wake this thread a little! I’ll defend the tuned small bore engine, and have always done so.
Even when I have a tuned 1293c engine a couple years ago, which was very fast & reliable.
I started collecting parts 2 years ago, and gonna build a 998cc screamer this winter.
Some parts is in progress for milling or another kind of process!
Org. Balanced 998cc D-crown pistons
Teflon-buttons instead of org. circlips
Org. Balanced 998cc Con rods
STD/010 balanced 998cc Crankshaft
Pocketed block for 1275cc head
Centre main strap
Lightened flywheel
Ultra lightened backplate
Old School 649 profile camshaft
Adjustable Timing gear set
Weber 40 DCOE carb (Split Weber 40’s later)
5" inlet manifold
Mk1 cast 3 into 1 exhaust manifold
RC 40 system
25D
41032 electronic dizzy
On classic mini community’s around the world it’s the same debate: Tuned 998 VS 1275?
There is nothing wrong with that, but I'm a little bit bored of this "It’s better to buy a 1275" debate!
Let’s say you tuning a big bore engine "big time" and have the argument;
"More power for less money if you try the same with a small bore engine"
Well thats true, pure and simple! But if you want this kind of 100-110ish BHP big bore engine
reliable all the way you
should invest adequate parts to reinforce your transmission (drop gears/diff/drivetrain)
If you tuning a small bore based on org. 998cc bore/stroke and have ;let’s say; 65-75ish BHP
It’s, in my opinion, not necessary to invest in expensive reinforcement transmission-parts!
Nowadays the big bore materials is very expensive and harder to find! (at least in Sweden)
But the small bore materials is easier to find for a bargain! And in my opinion own more reliability
In a tuned state!
Maybe Im a little bit philosophically! But I turn this to all those new born Classic Mini owners
who want to getting a reasonable power out of an A serie engine! You have fun anyway
