Post subject: | Alternator wiring |
My car had a bit of the wiring ripped when i bought it so ive started from scratch, all works but now im up to witing the alternator. My alternator has 3 pins 1x6 and 2x 9.5mm pins, it also had a control box "8TR" on the inner guard and im pretty sure this goes with it, someone got some tips on witing this as i havent got a wiring diagram that shows a " control box" The 8TR has 4 pins B+ + F - Cheers https://www.dropbox.com/s/lv5m7utnd71hz ... .46.20.jpg |

If it has only 1x 6mm spade lug and 2x big ones, it is a later alternator with internal regulator, and doesn't use the 8TR regulator box (if it did, there would be 2x 6mm lugs not 1). The 2 big lugs (thick brown wires) go to the battery terminal on the solenoid. The little one goes to the brown/yellow wire (charge light) which came from the 8TR cable connector. The green + black? wire from the 8TR down to the alt, is not used- just tape it up. You can leave the 8TR box there or unplug the cable connector and remove the 8TR. it does nothing now so doesn't matter. I know all this because I did mine years ago. |

Don't lose the 8TR solid state regulator as they are becoming rare |

On that page ^^^, the only one of those I've seen fitted to Minis here (with the 8TR or 4TR external regulator) was the 15AC. Used on Mk2S and Mini-K and late MiniMatic. |

Yeah mine is a 70-71 mini k so I guess someone has upgraded it at some point and the 8tr was just left behind. So I don't need it And it's rare does anyone need it? |

You can still buy them new, but they are getting expensive. Watch out though there are 8TRs for Jags etc which have a different pinout sequence on the terminal lugs. As I found out once.. |

Can someone please show me a photo of the original location of the external regulator on a Mk2 Cooper S please. I’m about to send my shell off for a paint job and I’d like to know which holes are for what. I bought my car with an internally regulated alternator which wasn’t correct for the car due to the pulley being offset to the belt line. Because of that, I’ve bought from John (minikingdom) a second hand correct 15AC and refurbished it with his supplied parts. |

This is the Lucas 8TR regulator that was fitted to the MK II S. It was replaced by a 4TR (black box) as the 8TR failed and during production of the GT I believe. Attachment: Enginecomplete003.jpg

Thanks Doug, just doesn’t appear to be much room there. The square holes in the metal must accept a nylon plug? - EDIT Mystery solved - there are 2 holes above the square ones that line up perfectly with regulator mounting position. Self tappers with the reg mounted higher up basically touching the loom strap. |
