Some things just don't want to die.

I've been told I have to get the mini running as my daughter wants her car back. It's been handy having a vehicle I can use any time I want but her new job means shift work and she'll need it more than me. Rather than have another crap car on the driveway to register, I reckon it will be more cost effective to fix the 1100 and use it as a daily driver for work and Sundays.

Time for a proper look.

I think I've found the previous owners sherbet stash. Interestingly, only the thermo housing and water pump were full of this stuff. The rest of the waterways were clear.

What could have created this notch? There was one more in another piston but the other two were good. There is one scratch in one bore that I can just feel with a thumbnail. I'm not sure if it can be honed out so a rebore may be necessary. The pistons don't have any oversize markings so I'm guessing they're original?

Could be the result of a broken piston ring maybe?

Actually, it looks like something small has entered the chamber and been squashed between the head and the piston. Way too much oily carbon in there to be melting stuff.

I'm having the head and block sorted locally so at least I'll have an engine I can use. I would have done it myself but the wife reminded me of the Ducati engine that's still needs reassembling despite having all the new parts sitting next to it, ready to go!

Originality be damned, I've resigned myself to the fact I'll have to convert to a gearbox with an extension. Given that I have a complete rod change assembly, where have I seen those handy kits for connecting them to the transmission tunnel?
