I looked into bearings not long ago and struggled to find anyone that had stock of 40thou. Turned out the crank was cracked anyway. Good luck with it.

Karcraft stocks -.040" mains for 998/1098. If they can't get ACL they import other brands.
I got some `King' -.030" 1275 big end bearings there this week.

Tried Karcraft. Didnt have 40thou. They had been waiting for stock, they said they were having trouble with supply at the moment. That was about 6 weeks ago though.

Thanks, it would probably be best to get it crack tested before I go any further with it.

I also did a trial bolt up of the 295 head to the block (without a head gasket though). The exhaust valve was contacting the block at about 10mm of valve lift. It was very close to missing on the block that was bored out +040, so it might be fine on a block bored out +060 or more...

It's important when grinding A series cranks to put a big (as possible) fillet radius on the journals. That's where the cracks start from.
Many cracked ones I've seen had been poorly reground.

I can crack test it for nix if you want to send it up.
Or you can buy a dyecheck kit from Blackwoods etc.

Yep, I'm hoping that it's not cracked and it'll grind up fine too..

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I get it checked out and re ground.

And I made a few impulse ebay buys - a set of carbs and a manifold. I'm not sure if I'll end up using them or the single HS4 I already have. Another decision to make in the future :D

Twins do look cool but their heavier and need more tuning time.

Yep, I'm swinging back to fitting the single 1 1/2" carb at the moment... It's cheaper, easier and it'll be easier to get right, it just doesn't have the look or the cool factor of twins..

A big cheers to drmini who has sorted me out with another crank! It's been crack tested and freshly ground :D

I was able to use a proper burette to measure the combustion chambers on the 295 head. They measured up at 27cc, which means I'll be able to get a decent compression ratio with the flat top pistons.

I'm a big fan of the single SU carb.. Not a lot of downside from twins, cheaper and less difficult to setup than twins or Webers etc.

I'm using a single 1 3/4 inch SU (HS6 I pinched from an Austin 1800) on a warm 998. Key is to get it setup by somebody who knows SU tuning though, to get the Air Fuel ratios right at cruise and at wide open throttle. Due to the variable choke / constant depression nature of SUs my 998 actually idles AND produces power at WOT even with a 1 3/4 carby which was a surprise to everybody involved in tuning my 998 Mini.

Single 1 1/2 should serve you well.

The current plan is to buy a minispares stage one kit and install it with the HS4 to the standard 998 in the car. That way I'll have the full exhaust system I'll use for the 1098 engine build and it'll make the car a bit more fun until the new engine goes in... (the intake manifold in the kit also fits an HS6 carb if I wish to use one in the future)

I'll definately be using the twin SU carbs on the 1098 engine when it is built! Exciting twin SU update to follow soon...

A little bit of an update for here:

The twin HS2's got bead basted by Mick and he also installed a rebuild kit so they are now like new. They are in storage for the moment.

The current 998 engine had the stage one kit fitted with the HS4 carb. It's a decent improvement so far, but it still needs to be tuned up properly.

A couple of weeks later the driveshaft couplings blew out on the highway (they were QL5000 style ones) so I've been spending my time rebuilding the diff with Hardy Spicer joints. I'll be on the road again by the end of the Easter weekend.

On the 1098 engine project front:
I've picked up a couple of extra 202 heads, all with double valve springs. This one looks the best:

I've also picked up a couple of 3.44 diffs and other little bits.

The 68mm build by GR is going to provide some inspiration as the numbers are quite impressive so far! I'd be happy with 75hp or so, similar to a stock Cooper S...

Next up:
Sort out the cam (RE13 or 266SS)
Pick an oversize for the pistons
