Engines that I have assembled in the past I have used a mixture of engine oil and molybdenum disulphide.
Seemed to work OK.

A few things have been happening in the last few months:

I borrowed a dial indicator gauge to start getting the short block assembled. The end float was a bit outside of spec (.008 to .009"), so I ordered in some +003 thou thrust bearings. When checking the end float I noticed crank had some strange marks on the middle main journal. After getting drmini and GR to have a look it turns out they are marks from being straightened at the crank shop.

The first set of big end bearings (County bearings in a King box) I bought turned out to be junk, so I got some new ACL bearings which look much better. The main bearings are also County brand, so I'll get in a new set of ACL ones to replace them (ACL weren't making them when I bought them over a year ago)
Brand new County big end bearings:

I've also picked up the 12G202 head during the Rylstone trip. The list is:
27.2mm / 1.07" exhaust valves
31.75mm / 1.25" inlet valves
Unleaded exhaust seats
Bronze valve guides
Combustion chamber & port work
Modification of inltake manifold to suit head
Skimmed flat

Any updates on this build?

Not today, but hopefully in the next week or so. I realised I was pretty close to finishing the head so all the parts have been ordered and it'll soon be assembled and ready to go on the shelf.

Next I'm planning on assembling the gearbox as I should have all the internal parts. The diff will be done later when I make up my mind on the ratio..

Here is my stash of parts for the head. I got a new stud kit, double valve springs, spring collars and stem seals. The valve caps and collet retainers will be a used set from my spare 940 head. I think I'll be using the standard rockers, but I'll get the tips refaced. The rocker cover was a successful test of the Dark Green 850/Cooper paint from MKO which will be used on the engine when it gets built. The head needs a really good clean out before I can install the valve springs and paint the head.

I love reading stuff like this, especially for those of us who haven't been very hands on of late. Gives us a bit of incentive to get back in the garage.

Timmy that rocker cover looks a million dollars. Did you use any primers?
I'm pulling the motor on mine and will need to repainted a similar colour.
cheers

Thanks Doug. I'm hoping finishing the head will give me the motivation to get stuck into the rest of the engine.

It might look ok in the photos but it's pretty rough in person! I didn't bother with sanding down the surface or any primer, it was really just to check the colour was what I was expecting.

The green matched pretty close to some old paint on some parts I've found on the car:

A little progress (life has been a bit hectic recently)... I bought a tap and die set and I’ve cleaned out all the threads in the head. Somehow I’ve run out of degreaser, once I get some I can give the head a good scrub out and then paint and assemble.

Thanks for the offer Jay. I'll be continuing to use the original 850 25D distributor with the Blackbox controlling the timing. For the gearbox I have nearly all the parts to complete the assembly, so won't need another gearbox.

In engine related news I've got an order through with hopefully all the necessary gaskets to assemble the engine. There is also a duplex timing kit and an "ultimate engine steady" which connects the thermostat housing on the engine to the bulkhead. I thought this would be a good idea if I am using the magic wand gear change.

After Rylstone this year I’ve been motivated to get a move on.

The small amount of progress for September was the installation of the valve springs. The bottom collars went on first, then the stem seals and the double springs, caps and retainers. The spring compressor was the cheapest one on eBay (under $25 delivered) and thankfully it worked well enough to get them all installed.

I've got all the studs installed after cleaning out the threads with my new tap & die set. I have a couple of sets of rocker arms I need to have a look through and figure out which ones to use. I suspect the engine will go much better with some high lift rockers but I'll talk to the expert and see what he recommends.

The head can now go on the "done" shelf for now and I'm hoping to get the gearbox assembled next as I think I have the majority of the parts to finish it..
