I wasn't sure if the C washer you'd bought was thick enough for the crank. My crank had wear in the groove so even a new C washer flopped around. I forget how much thicker than a standard one it ended up, but it was a fair bit, like between .020 and .040" |

I had 2 flywheels set aside and I was hoping to use one for this engine. I sent them up to drmini for him to have a look at - the 2 piece one got the go ahead for some further attention..  I got this back today! It's been lightened, balanced and had the diaphragm height set. My friend James recently upgraded to an orange clutch diaphragm so his old blue dot will be put to good use

Some of the last parts have turned up, a new AP clutch plate and some RHP diff bearings. I'll get the diff into the gearbox casing soon which will complete the gearbox

The new diff bearings got installed and I checked the pre load on the bearings. I need to get a couple of extra shims as it’s a bit loose at the moment.  On Sunday I was able to get a hand from Justin to get the end float right on the idler gear. Rather strangely I needed the two thinnest thrust washers in his stock to get it right.  Once I can double check all my work and torque settings I can bolt the gearbox and engine together finally!  I also installed the offset woodruff key and checked the cam timing. It’s all good now so I can install the timing cover. |

The day after Rylstone the 998 was removed  I've since cleaned up the engine bay and retouched a bit of the paint so it's now ready for the new engine to go in.  I pushed the two engines side by side to figure out what I'm missing and start to clean and swap over some parts. So far this has included: water pump, radiator shroud and brackets, fan & pulley, oil filter spin on assembly, alternator brackets, oil pressure gauge adapter, clutch arm & speedo cable  I pulled off the clutch cover to remove the throwout bearing plunger and bearing (the wide face type). The 998 had another surprise for me, it still has the coil spring clutch! I'm still trying to figure out exactly what happened with the 998 was installed - originally I assumed it would have just had a whole 998 engine/gearbox installed as it was remote change. Now I'm not sure!  More parts cleaned and repainted  I checked over everything while the engine was still on the stand, installed the water pump and timing cover & set the valve tolerances  I was missing the engine dowels that locate into the gearbox case, and luckily Trevor was able to find some for me. All that was left to do now was a trial assembly to make sure everything fit and I wasn't missing anything   Bit of a strange one here, the drain hole in the bottom right of the picture appears to be a blind hole despite being tapped for a plug? I have a drain plug from another engine but it bottoms out before it seals on the washer

Hi Timmy, looking good! One thing I noticed is something that gave me some grief when slotting an 1100 into my 850. The 1100 has a harmonic balancer that juts out past the pulley. This may rub on the bolts on the 850 lower radiator bracket. Solution is to change the lower radiator shroud and lower bracket to the Cooper S/1100 type, which is angled to provide clearance from the harmonic balancer. May not be a problem for you but keep an eye out for clearance issues once it is all assembled. It would be easy to fix after a test fit of the radiator assembly before installing the engine in the car. Keep the updates coming - the 1100 should be a great combination in your 850. |

I've ordered the last of the shims I need for the primary gear and diff bearings, so once they come in I can finally finish bolting everything onto the engine. There are a couple of things left to paint and clean and I'm going to give the front suspension and hubs a service and regrease while it's not too much of a pain. Thanks for the heads up. Test fitting the radiator was next on my list so I had a quick look this morning. With the lower bracket on it looks fine, close but not going to hit. When we installed the engine in my friend James' car recently we put the engine in with the radiator fitted and it worked really well, so I'm going to give that a go when I put mine back in too. Hopefully there'll be a bit more progress over the weekend

I would machine the head of that radiator bolt thinner or you won't be able to easily change the fan belt if or when it breaks or wears. Don't ask how I know this but it cost me a tow once... |

The exhaust has got another coat of silver paint. I also got the radiator, fan and pulley done today  I also gave the Dellorto a quick scrub up and it looks pretty good.   And here are a couple of photos of the two engines side by side
