It's an easy job with no booster in the way. Just bend a cheap 1/2" ring/OE spanner 45° at ring end to easily reach the 2 bottom bolts.

I always leave out the hardest to reach wok bolt. A trick my dad taught me.

Looks good Timmy.
The steel bush is hardened silver steel, it's about HRC 50.

GR and I measured these cheap plungers at HRC 3 hardness a while back. Dead soft free machining steel.
The more expensive en24t ones were not much harder.

Drmini offered to sleeve the new plunger as the new ones are very soft.

I bought a new set of bolts for the wok and they are 7/16” flanged bolts, hopefully a little easier to remove. I have a spare spanner to sacrifice

Changing over the plunger took a couple of hours this morning but the outcome was definitely worth it! Drmini offered to sleeve the new plunger as the new ones are very soft The new clutch arm is now installed (and painted black for you TK ) . The clutch pedal feels fantastic now, it doesn't feel any stiffer than the old setup It's immediately obvious the improved angle of the clutch arm, and also the reduced amount of clutch pushrod visible After all day in the garage we have the first sign of life!

Another long day of car stuff with some help from PhillB we knocked out most of the remaining jobs. First thing in the morning was checking the base timing, I had the suspicion I'd put the distributor drive in 180 degrees out. I checked it and I think I'm one tooth out as the distributor is rotated all the way to the left. After sorting that out the engine started right up!! After a couple of little teething problems (loose distributor and then loose throttle linkage) we did a couple of laps around the estate and some uphill pulls under load. It absolutely rips along now, clutch is great, gearbox has 4 synchros which is awesome for me (car still needs a wash from Rylstone as you can tell from the windscreen)

Cheers, Ian I just used the “heavy duty” arm available from the normal shops. I’d rather replace the arm any day than the plunger, so the arm being slightly softer in my mind is a good idea

Cheers, Ian Ian, I find the heavy duty arms like Tim's are pretty hard, the ball is heat treated unlike the current plungers. Original BMC plungers were over 50 HRC you cannot file them.

I bought the cheapest $15 plunger as I knew it would be sleeved, and it was very soft.

@winabbey, They are still soft, the suppliers have done SFA about it. It was like drilling butter. Material is obviously free machining steel, ledbrite or similar. Can't be hardened.
