They look good Tim, great job. Will you be putting new Bearings on the Mainshaft, 1st Motion and Laygear? |

I was going to get a kit like this, although I won't need the baulk rings in the kit. I have a couple of sets of usable bearings and a good lay shaft, but it's probably worth replacing them for peace of mind http://minikingdomonline.com.au/product ... e-gearbox/ |

A little update, I have the centre oil pickup now: Attachment: all-photos-2379_25156435820_o.jpg And a set of RHP bearings Attachment: all-photos-486_25219621456_o.jpg I'm waiting on a gasket set and layshaft, and then it should be ready to get it all back together... |

The centre pickup fits rod change boxes fine. On all other 4 synchro boxes, make sure the reverse selector arm in bottom of box misses the filter mesh (when reverse is engaged). Before you put any gears in. Otherwise, this arm will chew a hole in the mesh. Usually, this centre oil pickup needs the top bend's angle straightened a little. I put it across my 4" vice with soft jaws in, and give it a little squeeze. This moves the mesh & the pipe forwards to clear. |

Thanks, I'll make sure it all fits in and avoids the reverse selector. After almost 2 years I've taken one block to get bored out (+080), cam bearings installed and a cam reground (RE266SS). Once that is done (and the mini bank account has recovered) I'll build up the short block at home while I get a head done with some bigger valves. I took up my 202 & 295 heads for evaluation, and the 295 wasn't up to scratch - the chambers were too big, and the ports were also too big. I'll be getting a mildly modified 202 head done when the time comes. |

Some progress on the engine recently! The block is back from the engine shop: Bored out to +080 Decked block New pistons installed to rods Rods checked and straightened Cam bearings installed Cam reground - RE266S Cam followers reground Attachment: all-photos-297_33056632351_o.jpg And this is the crank I picked up (a few years ago now) from drmini, just noticed I didn't have a photo yet Attachment: all-photos-301_33056634341_o.jpg I've dropped off a 202 head today to get rebuilt and modified to suit the engine. I'll get started on the short block and gearbox assembly soon, hope to be done this year if possible |

Nice Tim, will be good to follow your progress on this one. Are you painting the block now whilst all clean and surface rust free or later once the build is complete? Like your flat tops! Enjoy your posts so make sure you put up plenty of updates including photos. |

Thanks Sean. I'm not sure on the time frame for the painting, I might prime the block now and paint the head and engine once I get it all together. At the moment I'd like to paint it the BMC green from the earlier cars which I believe my car would have been originally. Something like this is the plan: |

I've finally got the engine up on the stand to get started on the engine assembly. I've got the crank bearings and new thrusts, oil pump and a gasket kit. Attachment: img_6193_34548621732_o.jpg Do these thrust bearings look OK? The top coat is a little inconsistent between them Attachment: img_6201_34325960790_o.jpg

ACL should be OK. I've never had a problem with them. Put the 2 best looking ones on the clutch side of the centre main, the other 2 get hardly any loading. And check your crank's end float with a dial gauge. You want .005-.006" to avoid thrust washer damage at high rpm. |

Thanks, sounds good. Do you have any preference on assembly grease for cam and crank? |

You can buy SPZ cam lube in a tube, but it's a bit runny I find. I use Castrol LMM moly grease. For the bearings I use STP if I have it. Or, motor oil. To help the rings bed in, assemble them with WD40, not motor oil. And, don't sit there for 20 mins @ 2000 rpm bedding the cam in. It could glaze the bores. Go drive it ASAP up a few hills. Just keep revs below 3000. |
