Im rebuilding my 1275 1100s motor, got it back from machine shop today and starting the build, main bearings in and put the thrust washers but its way to tight and the std bearings.

Im following the mini mania build video as its my first mini engine rebuild.

What could i possibly be doing wrong here??

Cheers brad

have you got the caps in the correct/original position from when you pulled the engine down?

I presume it's the same crank that was in the block before?

Do you have the old thrust washers to measure and compare size to the new ones?

You can get std, +.003" and +.030" thrust washers.
Check the washers are not bent, I have found this with some new ones.
If they are just a bit tight, you can lap the steel backing on an oilstone.

Also, do not use less than .005" end float if it's going to get a rev. The .003" shown in the book is too tight for other than a stock motor that will never be revved.
Don't ask how I know this... I found out the hard way. :x

Hi Wakes01

How'd you go sorting this out,
End up figuring out the issue with the thrust washer?

I have same problem.Standard thrust washers too tight
Just received a second set ACL this time.
Will measure and see if there is a difference.
Maybe a crook batch or wrong labelled plus 003s out there.
I wonder what comes from China and the like Things don't wear bigger This is crazy and im pleased im not the only one.

Get the back of the thrust washers surface ground a few thou as a set.
I need to do this every time (Cooper S crank in a non-S block needs about .015" off std ones to fit).

[edit] for clarity

We measured today a new set of ACLs against old stock new unused Vandervell and some used old ones.
The ACLs are two thou thicker than the Vandervells

Thank you Ian and Kev. I'm about to put a copper S crank in a non S block. Ian can you please tell me the product codes for the washers you have for reference.

Cheers jason

ACL std thrusts are 2T2204. You need to grind the back of these to put S crank in a non-S block.

ACL's other sizes are 2T2204+003, and 2T2204+030

I'm not sure how available these are now, the ACL bearing factory in Tassie closed, but rumour is it will soon re-open.

I have lapped the back off of my std thrust bearings and am using a dial gauge to measure the end float.
With the crank in one position I get a reading of >6 thou.
When rotated 45' and measured again, approx same reading.
With second and third rotations thru another 45 and measured again I am getting readings of neare to 5 thou.

Do I have to worry about the variation?
If not, are the tolerances ok? I reckon they are.

.001" variation is nothing to worry about.
