Thanks doc. Will definitely look into these .
Was chatting to matt yesterday and am having a think about this auto idea .
In principle I would love to stay with the auto. Reality is though it needs a rebuild and I hate the idea of oil changing every 1000ks just to keep it running well enough .
I have a 3 synchro here .... Maybe it's the option.... Cheaper at least and may result in more fun.
I hate these dilemmas ... But I said to myself early on I was building this car to drive and for fun. So it not going to be concourse anyways as the adjustables and discs go on , why worry about an auto. Could this be wasamatic #2? :)

wouldn't be number two. Lots of matics are no longer auto (like mine), for good reason.

Be easier to count the ones that are still auto, I reckon it'd be a smaller number.
At least the ones with a manual in are still running, many of the others got parked.

There are not many places here who recondition the autos, most shops run a mile to avoid them.
But I can think of a couple.
And, parts supply for automatics here in Oz is pretty pathetic. Yeah, I know you can import parts from UK, but many bits are NLA.
OTOH a manual box rebuild is pretty easy, not many tricks inside.

Ok , question .
Is the 998 auto block different to the manual? Does it need mods to fit a manual gearbox?

Same as doing a 1275 block except...
1. The oil pump recess depth on a 998 auto block is the same as a 998 manual one, so no spacer is needed. Unless you wish to fit a 1275 spider or slot drive oil pump to the auto's camshaft.
2. The oil drilling from the relief valve to the pump stops short, this needs to be drilled deeper to reach the pump. Do this with the relief valve seat removed, see 4, below.
3. Ditto, the hole in the pump recess for the pump's outlet needs drilling.
3. As for the 1275, the relief valve seat needs to be removed, then either its 2 drilled holes brazed up, or a manual valve seat fitted. These are available from Minispares UK.

See my thread with pics - it is in the how-to forum and I've edited it for brevity.

I believe that the uniqueness of the auto and keeping it that way will bring a lot more smiles to your face than turning it into just another one that has been changed over.

If you want to keep the `matic uniqueness but keep up with traffic on hills, drop a 1275 auto on it.
The Morris 1100S/1300 auto box is the same as the 998, except for the primary gear and oil filter. Keep the `matic one, as you can still get filter elements.

Valid point Simon...its def on my mind.

On another note :

I pulled out a crown wheel and pinion from the pile , counted the teeth and arrived at

17 / 62

Haven't seen any stampings yet but this combo should be 3.647 FD

Will check the others as I pull them . But seems like a nice ratio to drive with. I wonder how it would go with a 1220 Auto and a 266ss cam?

The manual diff crown wheel & pinion will NOT fit in an auto box.
The auto ones are physically different/BIGGER.

Your auto box has a 3.26:1 diff already, however as the auto's drop gear ratio is 1.15:1, overall it is 3.76:1. Same ratio as an 850 or 998 Deluxe had, 14.7MPH/1000rpm.

However if building a 1220 manual, I would put a 3.444 in it.

3.647 was used in most Mini Ks and 1098 Clubbies. I run one in my 1360, however it's getting a 3.444 soon. So I can stop 1st gear wheelspin @ 5000-7500rpm.:)

Drive a 998 auto. You will quickly discover the "uniqueness" is very impractable and BORING. You will decide on a manuel box I'm sure.

I agree TK . I drove this before I pulled the engine. Quite uninspiring. However I appreciate it for what it is , it's not a race engine . It's a plonker cruiser . That's why I'm looking at working with what I have and modding the 99H as best it can.
A 1220 auto won't break any records but it will be unique and function adequately .
I can always build a manual engine later .

Doc : no 1st gear wheel spins in this little auto :) :p
