Anybody have a particular favourite carbide tip they recommend? I might steal Docs trick of setting it up on drill press .... |

Pretty crusty but I've seen worse. Give it a nice long soak in molasses and water, 1:3 ratio. Or vinegar. Top face of head can be decked a few thou to clean up when the rust monster has gone. |

Doc there is a chunk taken out of the top right stud hole , is it imperative to have this recess all nice n flush? |

If not flush there the water can get into the thread. After you derust it, fill that bit with JB weld (filled epoxy) or similar. Run a 5/16 UNC plug (bottoming) tap into the threads to clean them, but do NOT tap any deeper. |

This was the result of the caustic soda bath with a high-pressure waterblast afterwards, then spraying some metal prep conditioner over the whole head. Ended up getting this funny white powdery stuff:) |

Thanks doc . I think I might try my new silicon bronze rods on this to build it up |

The head measured 69.7 or 2.7440" I'm guessing this has been decked before as the original is 2.75" or 69.85mm right ? |

If you are going to braze it, preheat the whole head first to avoid cracking. It's cast iron. Put head on a 2 burner camp stove. Light. Open beer, drink. Repeat last step... When all the paint etc has burned off you are ready to go. Braze head. I use nickel bronze, it's less runny, and stronger than manganese bronze. Use bronze welding flux, not the stuff on the coated rod. Turn stove off. Erect a teepee or frame well above the stove and cover with blanket/doona/whatever. Leave to cool, it'll take hours. Have another beer or 3.. If you are going to MIG or TIG it with silicon bronze, I would still preheat it as above. Maybe a bit less. [edit] That height may be original, the 2.750" is a nominal measurement. |

have you guys looked at the minisport 202 head, it's an exchange deal with oversize cooper inlets. I would have thought oversize exhaust in these would be a boon also. Is this a viable option or to much $$$. |

The metal prep will leave a coat of I think zinc oxide on bare metal surfaces to inhibit the rust and allow for a nice contact for painting. Shouldn't be too much to worry about though and will always clean off with another blast. |

Is this a viable option or to much $$$. It seems a bit on the high side for essentially a standard head with an unleaded conversion. |

Unless your chambering and porting, the miniskirt head will offer nothing more than your local head shop could do , probably for a lot less . |
