box separated from block, pulled the little 998 cranky out. Question does anybody know whether I have to keep my rods for the new 80thou over Pistons from GR? Or do I have to buy new rods? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Discovered this block had 30,000 over pistons in it so it's obviously been rebuilt in the past. I have a confession! it's been decided that will go only 80thou over on this block making it about 1161 mL? Reason being it's the original block for car and I don't want to muck it up so we are playing it safe with regard to block boring and staying clear of the 1220 offset bore just in case. It seems with discussing this engine with a few experts that building The 1160 and matching the camshaft for a high torque low rpm engine would be the best compromise for the automatic. You can use the 998 rods, they are same as 1098 ones. Check the rods for straightness. I would not use lock tabs, new ones are soft- just oil the rod bolt threads then torque to 35 ft/lb. |

If the block is already got 30thou over Pistons... What do I do to work out how much to bore to get 80thou over Pistons in there? How would I communicate that to the machinist ? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Give him your 80thou pistons and say make these fit! All he needs to know is that it will be 80thou over std |

I would use Russell Engineering's +.080 pistons. These have 2 compression rings. Avoid pistons with 3 compression rings on a 1098 stroke crank, the ring lands are tiny width and break easy. Ask Graham what the recommended bore clearance is when you buy them. Or, send the block down and let him bore and hone it. |
