I reckon you should have the head refaced, and after you've cleaned all remnants of the gasket off the block, get a nice clean (well oiled) oilstone and gently clean the top of the block with it - randomly go all over in all directions - figure eights in different directions etc. etc. You should be able to get it shiny all over including between #2 and #3 where it's dark right now
I ended up cheating I had Mini Classic do the work and got a couple of other issues solved as well i.e. welsh plugs new hilo an engine mount and a couple of other bits that are a pain in but to do in my home garage.
Also as i hadn't had the engine apart before and I have only just bought this thing I thought I get an expert to look at the inside and make sure everything is where it should be.
Good news it's 1310 so plenty to go if needed the head is standard which is great and everything up top looks good
