I reckon you should have the head refaced, and after you've cleaned all remnants of the gasket off the block, get a nice clean (well oiled) oilstone and gently clean the top of the block with it - randomly go all over in all directions - figure eights in different directions etc. etc. You should be able to get it shiny all over including between #2 and #3 where it's dark right now


I ended up cheating I had Mini Classic do the work and got a couple of other issues solved as well i.e. welsh plugs new hilo an engine mount and a couple of other bits that are a pain in but to do in my home garage.

Also as i hadn't had the engine apart before and I have only just bought this thing I thought I get an expert to look at the inside and make sure everything is where it should be.

Good news it's 1310 so plenty to go if needed the head is standard which is great and everything up top looks good

OB...the head gasket could have been on the way out for months and nothing to do with oil or water etc

Did Greig advise what your Compression Ratio was along with 1310cc :?:

Head gasket had nothing to do with with the water but it did the water marks down the front of the engine it all lines up

compression was now all even didn't ask what it was at but I can check.

To explain, a failed water pump, thermostat etc can cook an engine and/or blow head gasket...

Just suggesting that you be careful removing any metal until you know where you are wrt Compression Ratio and whether the head has been modified etc

all good I should just follow my wifes instructions she said just replace everything but I said where is the fun in that.

You would think that a head gasket would last more than 30 yrs wouldn't you ? LOL Glad it is all good once you looked inside the engine.

Wow!!

So your mission, should you accept it, "is to replace everything" but don't actually fit it till its broke...or you feel the need for more bling!!

That head gasket is not just gone, it's completely rooted and has been suffering for ages...
I'm amazed the engine performed ok at all until the day it finally said enough.....?
