Have you tried pulling off one plug lead at a time to see which cylinder is not firing

What plug leads are you running? If they are suppression type, put a multimeter on them to check resistance. bend them around and see if reading goes open circuit. If so it is toasted.
Anything over 5K ohm I put in the bin. New Bosch ones are 1.5-1.8 K ohm, GR's ones are lots less.
If buying new, get inductive core leads (Bosch, GR's etc), not graphited string (cheapies).

My car can't idle nicely under 1200rpmish?

Just up the idle to 1100-1200? (provided you check the leads etc as Kev is saying)

I'll check the cables tonight but I have upped the idle and adjusted the fuel mixer and this morning it was running like a demon

I like the wire cable type of lead, bullet proof...

Inductive core cable is good. It is similar to the shielding found in coax cable.

Well after a lot of tinkering "as my wife calls it" it's running a lot better but I still have a bit of pinging when it's under a bit of load

Also found a neat trick on YouTube on looking for escaping spark

Turn the lights out make the garage really dark. Run your engine get a spray bottle on mist and spray it over your leads cool and distributor to see if any sparks occur.
I found I needed to shield a couple of cables on my coil noticed they let off a couple of sparks. Love these little tricks

that's a neat trick... might give that a go. I put my timing light on each lead and see if there are any gaps in the flashing

Are you still running points? AFter installing electronic ignition I can wind mine down all the way to about 600rpm and it's still pretty smooth, but the alternator doesn't work at those speeds.
