Are there any 7 port heads to stay clear of?

Not what I've heard...
Cheap ones are cheap for a reason.

Well you've made the call, do tell. What did Graham say?

FYI. Firsthand - I know of a cheap 7 port that is running around Brissy with no problens except for wheel spin.

Hi TK,
Note:
I am referring to the Pierce A series 7 port alloy head here. Not the Arden, Elder, etc ones.
I am only the messenger so don't shoot me. :)
1. Hardness. They are too soft, alloy will pull down under head nuts at 40lb/ft. Don't go past 35.
2. The spark plug holes are M8, the only heat ranges available seem to be an 8 or 9 in NGK parlance. Tending to be too cold for a regular road car.
No, there is not enough meat there to make them bigger and get a wider range of plugs..
3. High lift rockers and cam will exceed valve lift allowed as the spring seats are high. Can't deepen them, there is insufficient material there.
Common solution seems to be cut the valves deeper into the head. I guess longer valves would fix, if available.

Messenger? so it's hearsay. Hmmm.

Re: Arden (8 port?) are not a bolt on option. Spend big and spend alot more.
Elder, who sells them?

!. Not a problem is it?
2. Spark plugs work fine.
3. Common solution? How common? I have heard of only one person doing that. Oh he mentioned it here on this forum. Anyway he sunk his valves before knowing of the MED valve caps, they work fine. Did you know that MED use and sell this 'cheap' head.

I've seen quite a few photos of recessed head bolts and rocker posts. I think it was a Pierce head IIRC.
Why so salty?

So you're not sure if it was a Pierce 7 port? I wonder what head it was. Can you share these photos and the stories from the owners?

Not salty, just giving facts and not publishing someone else's opinion.

I like facts not opinions.

All I can say mate is do your homework. You're off to a great start by asking about it on this forum. Try using the search function. Get opinions, facts and first hand experiences. As you know by now, I'm a facts man.

I don't know of Oz Mini Parts but Minisport.com.au (Adelaide) sell a form of a seven port. Other sellers & other types of seven port available here I'm not sure about. You may want to consider importing, exchange rate might have some bearing on this.

Good luck.

PS. no one is upset. :)

A guy at work bought one of the Pierce heads. He got it to work ok but it took him ages and cost nearly as much again to get there. He had to get special valves (from GR) and rocker gear (from MED) and extra machining done on the heads. They're not simply a bolt on out of the box exercise. Maybe that's the reason why the MED versions cost so much more.

His is on a Clubman GT with the twin 40 Webers that came with them (are these the Spanish ones that come in the kit or the inferior knock offs?).

BTW Minispares have released a new alloy 5 port head in race/road specs

I have never seen a equal comparison (same valves, springs, cam etc) between an iron 5 port and any 7 or 8 port head. Yes you will get more power from one of these as the designe will flow better than a 5 port but exact numbers or percentage are hard to come by IMO.
